The Detroit Tigers stumbled over the weekend with a series loss to the lowly Kansas City Royals. They’ll try to bounce back against another of the AL Central’s lesser teams Monday when they begin a five-game set against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

Detroit, which is 12-5 this month, lost two of three over the weekend to the Royals, dropping Sunday’s series finale 5-2. The Tigers (58-38) tried to make a comeback in the ninth inning after Magglio Ordonez hit an RBI double to put two runners on with no outs, but Detroit failed to bring in another run.

It was the Tigers’ first series defeat since losing two of three to Minnesota from June 29-July 1.

With the Royals’ win on Sunday and Chicago’s 8-5 loss to Boston later in the day, the White Sox (43-54) fell into a last-place tie with Kansas City. It’s the latest they have been in last since the final day of the 1989 season.

Chicago was outscored 29-10 in the final three games of its series with the Red Sox after opening the set with a 4-2 win on Thursday.

After finishing its road trip with a 4-7 record, Chicago returns to U.S. Cellular Field, where it has the fewest home wins in the majors (19).

The White Sox now turn to Mark Buehrle (7-5, 2.91 ERA), who has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last eight starts. The left-hander gave up one run and 10 hits in 6 1-3 innings to beat Cleveland 5-1 on Wednesday.

Monday will be Buehrle’s first start at home since signing a four-year, $56 million extension on July 8.

Buehrle is 3-3 with a 3.00 ERA in 10 starts at home this season. He is 11-7 with a 2.92 ERA in 20 starts and one relief appearance against the Tigers. The 11 wins are the third most he has against any team, trailing only Minnesota (19) and Kansas City (16).

Ordonez, who played with the White Sox from 1997-2004, is 7-for-12 with two homers off Buehrle. Overall, he is hitting .339 against his former team.

Detroit counters with Andrew Miller (5-3, 3.18), who has alternated wins and losses in his last seven starts. He allowed one run and four hits in five innings Wednesday in a 3-2 victory over the Twins.

Miller made one relief appearance against the White Sox last season, allowing one hit in 1 2-3 innings.

Chicago has won 13 of the last 20 home meetings against the Tigers. These teams will play a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday to make up an April 26 rainout.

NOTES: The thing I like about both Miller and Buehrle is they get the ball and throw it, so quick work for both of these guys.

Yanks sting Devil Rays in first game of doubleheader

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

Bronx, NY - Hideki Matsui and Shelley Duncan each hit two- run homers as the New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 7-3, in the first game of a doubleheader.

ANOTHER PIZZA PLAY WINNER YANKEES -1.5 -115 MONEY

Robinson Cano went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored for the Yankees, who avoided losing three straight. Bobby Abreu and Andy Phillips each had two hits in the victory.

New York starter Kei Igawa pitched five frames, allowing two runs on seven hits. Igawa also fanned six and walked three. Luis Vizcaino (7-2) was credited with the victory after pitching a scoreless sixth.

Jason Hammel came out of the bullpen to start for Tampa Bay and pitched just four innings, giving up two runs on three hits. He was then optioned down to Triple-A Durham after the game.

“Today I felt real good,” said Hammel. “My rhythm was good and everything just felt real good on the mound. It was a great line-up (to face) and I thought I did pretty well. I felt like I had a few more (innings) in me, but I don’t want to get hurt on something silly. Definitely, I’d like to be a starter but I’ll take any role if I can help the club. It’s bittersweet (being sent to the minors), but hopefully I’ll be back real soon.”

Jae Kuk Ryu (1-2) absorbed the loss after allowing five runs on four hits in only 1 2/3 innings.

B.J. Upton, Ty Wigginton and Raul Casanova all hit solo home runs for the Devil Rays, who have lost two of their last three games.

With the game tied at 2-2, the Yankees plated five runs with two outs in the sixth to take control. Abreu singled to start things and Alex Rodriguez was hit by a pitch. Matsui and Jorge Posada followed with strikeouts before Cano picked them up and singled home Abreu. A base hit by Phillips brought two more runs in and Duncan’s two-run homer made it 7-2.

“It was a changeup, and the ball started in my zone and I committed to it,” said Duncan, who was pushed from the dugout by his Yankee teammates in response to a curtain call from the fans. “I just really made sure I wanted to stay on it, because the at-bat before I came off (the pitch), and I struck out. I wasn’t going to let that happen again.”

“It was really a special game,” Duncan added. “I never really expected (the standing ovation). It was probably one of the coolest things I’ve ever been a part of.”

Tampa Bay made it a four-run game in the eighth after Casanova hit a home run off Scott Proctor.

The D-Rays loaded the bases in the ninth with two outs, but Mariano Rivera struck out Jonny Gomes to end the game.

Home runs by Upton in the first inning and Wigginton in the second gave the Devil Rays an early 2-0 lead.

The score remained tied until Matsui launched a two-run homer in the fourth frame to even the score. Rodriguez walked with one out before Matsui belted his 15th homer of the season.

Game Notes

Duncan’s home run was the first of his career…Tampa Bay outfielder Carl Crawford left the game in the fifth inning with a sprained left ankle and will not play in the second game of the doubleheader…Scheduled starting pitchers for the night cap of the doubleheader are Matt DeSalvo for the Yankees and J.P. Howell for the Devil Rays

The New York Yankees had been sizzling. Suddenly, they’ve lost consecutive games for the first time this month.

The Yankees try to avoid dropping their third - and possibly fourth - game in a row Saturday when their home series against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays continues with a day-night doubleheader.

New York (48-46) came out of last week’s All-Star break hot, winning six of seven and beating Toronto 6-1 on Wednesday for their fifth victory in a row. With the run, the Yankees trimmed their AL East deficit to Boston - once as big as 14 1/2 games - to seven.

The Yankees, however, lost their series finale with the Blue Jays 3-2 on Thursday, then got routed 14-4 by the Devil Rays (38-57) on Friday night in the opener of this four-game set. The Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox on Friday, pushing New York’s deficit in the division to eight.

B.J. Upton had his first career two-homer game for Tampa Bay, Dioner Navarro added a grand slam and every Devil Rays starter reached base. The 14 runs were the most scored by the Rays since a 19-6 win at Yankee Stadium on July 29.

Tampa Bay opened its seven-game road trip on a positive note by earning its third win in four games overall.

The Yankees, meanwhile, allowed their highest run total since a 14-2 defeat to Texas on May 10. Mike Mussina gave up six runs in 4 2-3 innings Friday to suffer the loss.

Plenty more scoring could be in order Saturday, when all four scheduled starting pitchers have an ERA of 5.87 or higher. Kei Igawa (2-2, 6.97 ERA) may need a strong start in the opener to remain in New York’s rotation, as right-handers Jeff Karstens (right elbow) and Phil Hughes (left hamstring) are on their way back from injuries.

Igawa struggled through five innings Monday against Toronto, giving up three runs and seven hits while walking four and throwing 115 pitches. He did not earn a decision in the Yankees’ 6-4 victory.

Since being recalled June 22 after a stint in the minors, the Japanese rookie left-hander is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in four starts. His first major league loss came at Tampa Bay on April 23, when he yielded seven runs and eight hits - two homers - in 4 1-3 innings of a 10-8 defeat.

Jason Hammel (1-0, 6.11) will make his first start of the year for the Devil Rays in the first game. The right-hander, 0-6 with a 7.77 ERA in nine starts last season, has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen in 2007. He had a pair of scoreless outings totaling one inning in last week’s series with the Yankees at Tropicana Field.

Hammel fared poorly in a start against New York on Sept. 13, suffering the loss after surrendering six runs, six hits - two homers - and three walks in 4 2-3 innings.

The Yankees will summon rookie right-hander Matt DeSalvo (1-3, 5.87) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start the nightcap, his first appearance in the major leagues since June 4. He lasted only 1 1-3 innings in that outing against the Chicago White Sox, allowing three runs, four hits and a walk to suffer a 6-4 defeat.

After beginning his major league career with consecutive quality starts in May, DeSalvo is 0-3 with a 11.57 ERA in three starts and one relief appearance.

Tampa Bay, meanwhile, will call up J.P. Howell (1-3, 6.62) from the minors to pitch the night game. The left-hander recorded only two outs in his last start July 5 at Boston, giving up six runs, six hits and two walks in a 15-4 defeat. It was the shortest of his 30 starts over three seasons.

Howell, though, had one of the best outings of his career Sept. 23 against the Yankees, allowing three hits in seven innings to earn an 8-0 victory at Tropicana Field.

This is only the 12th doubleheader in franchise history for the Devil Rays, who will have played four of those twinbills at Yankee Stadium.

Carmona solid as Cleveland downs Texas

Saturday, July 21st, 2007

Arlington, TX - Fausto Carmona tossed a three-hitter over eight scoreless innings and Cleveland held off Texas, 3-2, in the second test of a four-game series at Rangers Ballpark.

ANOTHER PIZZA PLAY WINNER TRIBE -128

Carmona (12-4), on a personal four-start win streak, struck out seven batters and walked three before the Rangers mounted a ninth-inning rally off closer Joe Borowski.

Desi Relaford reached on a fielding error by Ryan Garko and pinch- hitter Adam Melhuse and Mark Teixeira singled for a two-run Rangers deficit. Marlon Byrd then grounded into a forceout for the second out, but Frank Catalanotto walked to load the bases for Gerald Laird, who hit a routine ground ball up the middle. Mike Rouse bobbled it, however, as another run scored with the bases still loaded for Brad Wilkerson, who went down swinging as Borowski escaped with his 28th save of the season.

Travis Hafner homered for the struggling Indians, who picked up a much-needed win in Thursday’s opener to now record consecutive victories for the first time since putting together a six-game win streak from June 28- July 3.

Victor Martinez doubled three times and scored a run in the win, which pulled the Tribe within one game of the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers, who were beaten 10-2 by the Kansas City Royals.

Teixeira ended 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run for the Rangers, who have lost three straight after winning their previous three games. Center fielder Kenny Lofton left after fouling a pitch against his right foot in the third inning.

Brandon McCarthy (4-7), who has not won since a May 20 decision at Houston, allowed three runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.

Cleveland got on the board in the fifth when Josh Barfield doubled, advanced a base on a wild pitch, and scored on a Grady Sizemore groundout.

The Tribe got two more runs in the sixth to seal the win, as Martinez lined a lead-off double followed by Hafner’s two-run homer to right field on the first pitch he saw.

Game Notes

Cleveland got its sixth consecutive victory over the Rangers…Garko extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games with a single in the second inning…Texas grounded into three double plays…Texas played again without All-Star shortstop Michael Young, who is in California attending the funeral of his wife’s grandmother. Young is expected to return to the team in time for Saturday’s contest…The Indians swept a two-game set from the Rangers at Jacobs Field in April and are now 6-2 in their last eight games in Arlington.

cleveland indians graffit wall tommy mac

The Cleveland Indians haven’t won back-to-back games in more than two weeks. Their dominating pitching duo is trying to end that drought.

The Indians look to continue their success against the Texas Rangers when they meet Friday in the second game of a four-game series at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Cleveland (56-39) won six in a row from June 28-July 3, but is 5-7 since. Ace left-hander C.C. Sabathia wasn’t at his best Thursday, but pitched well enough to lead the Indians to a 7-5 win over Texas and become the first 13-game winner in the majors.

Now the Indians will try for consecutive victories for the first time since that six-game winning streak when they hand the ball to Fausto Carmona (11-4, 3.77 ERA). The right-hander is enjoying a breakout season and looks to win his fourth straight start.

He held Kansas City to two runs and eight hits over seven innings in a 5-3 victory Sunday.

With his latest win, Carmona improved to 8-0 with a 1.98 ERA in nine day starts, compared to 3-4 with a 6.00 ERA in nine night games. He lost his only career start against the Rangers when he gave up six runs over 5 2-3 innings in a 7-5 defeat on April 29, 2006.

Cleveland has won all won all three meetings with Texas this season and five straight overall.

Indians first baseman Ryan Garko extended his hitting streak to 13 games Thursday and is batting .467 (21-for-45) with three homers, eight doubles and 10 RBIs during that stretch.

Center fielder Grady Sizemore went 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs. He’s 5-for-11 in his career against Brandon McCarthy, Texas’ Friday starter.

McCarthy gave up four runs - three earned - and six hits over six innings Sunday, and didn’t factor in the decision in a 5-4, 11-inning win over the Los Angeles Angels. He walked two and struck out four, and is 0-2 with a 5.16 ERA over his last five starts.

McCarthy (4-6, 5.59) hasn’t had much support during that stretch, though, as the Rangers didn’t score a run in four of those outings.

McCarthy is 3-1 with a 6.16 ERA in 10 games, including two starts, against the Indians. He threw two scoreless innings of relief in Texas’ 8-7 loss at Cleveland on April 25.

The Rangers (41-54) placed reliever Akinori Otsuka on the 15-day disabled list Thursday after an MRI exam determined the right-hander has inflammation in his forearm that is causing pain in his elbow.

Texas was also without shortstop Michael Young on Thursday after the death of his wife’s grandmother in Southern California. He’s expected to miss Friday’s contest as well and rejoin the team Saturday.

The Rangers are trying to avoid losing three in a row for the first time since June 10-13.

Freel’s HR lifts Reds over Marlins

Friday, July 20th, 2007

Miami, FL - Ryan Freel’s three-run homer in the eighth lifted the Cincinnati Reds over the Florida Marlins, 7-5, in the opener of a four- game set at Dolphin Stadium.

ANOTHER PIZZA PLAY WINNER: REDS +149 MONEY

Adam Dunn knocked in a pair of runs while Javier Valentin went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for the Reds, who have won four in a row.

Miguel Olivo and Josh Willingham both went deep for Florida, which has dropped three of four.

Cincinnati coughed up an early three-run lead, and was trailing 5-3 heading into the eighth. Valentin started the frame off with a double, though, and Edwin Encarnacion followed with a single. Norris Hopper came up next and brought one run in with a base hit.

Jeff Keppinger then put down a sacrifice bunt before Freel launched an Armando Benitez (2-5) offering over the left-field wall.

Todd Coffey (2-1) and David Weathers shut the door from there, with Weathers working the ninth for his 19th save.

Matt Belisle got the start for the Reds and allowed five runs over 4 2/3 frames. His opponent, Sergio Mitre, yielded three runs over six-plus innings.

The Reds put up a three-spot in the first to forge ahead. With two on and two out, Dunn cracked a double to right that cleared the bases and put the Reds up 2-0. Valentin followed with a double of his own to cap the inning.

Florida responded, though, with five unanswered runs.

The first came in the second inning courtesy of Hanley Ramirez’s RBI single. The Marlins then went ahead in the fourth, as Olivo blasted a two-run homer to left and Dan Uggla doubled in Alfredo Amezaga later in the frame.

Willingham tacked on a solo homer in the fifth — his 15th long ball of the season — to increase the Florida lead to 5-3.

Game Notes

The Reds placed right-hander Aaron Harang on the bereavement list Thursday, purchased the contract of Ricky Stone from Triple-A Louisville, and transferred pitcher Eric Milton to the 60-day disabled list…The Marlins activated outfielder Cody Ross from the 60-day disabled list and optioned outfielder Eric Reed to Albuquerque (PCL).

After a rough start to their longest road trip of the season, the Cincinnati Reds look ready to go on an extended roll.

The Reds try for a season-high fourth straight victory away from home when they open a four-game series with the Florida Marlins on Thursday.

Cincinnati (40-55) began its 11-game trip by losing three of four to the New York Mets. The Reds bounced back by earning their first three-game sweep in Atlanta since April 1990 to improve to 20-29 away from home.

Brandon Phillips hit a two-run single in the 15th inning to lift Cincinnati to a 5-4 victory over the Braves in Wednesday’s finale. Adam Dunn had a two-run homer and Ken Griffey Jr. became the 84th player in history with 2,500 hits when he singled in the first.

It was the Reds’ first series win on the road since the end of May, and followed a stretch in which they had gone 5-13 away from Great American Ball Park without winning back-to-back games.

The Reds, winners of eight of their last 11 games, outscored the Braves 21-12 during the series and totaled 37 hits. Their starting rotation posted a 1.83 ERA in the three contests.

Matt Belisle (5-6, 5.02 ERA) tries to help Cincinnati extend its run as he looks to build on a strong start in his last outing. The right-hander held the Mets to one run and nine hits over seven innings Saturday, although he didn’t factor in the decision in the 2-1 defeat.

Belisle is 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA in his last seven starts, with the Reds losing all of those games. He’s 4-1 with a 4.19 ERA in nine road starts, but hasn’t earned a decision in the last four of those outings. Cincinnati dropped all four contests.

Belisle is 0-1 with a 3.55 ERA in five career games against the Marlins (45-50).

The Reds took four of six meetings with the Marlins last season and are 11-4 in their last 15 games in Miami.

Florida was held to three hits Wednesday and got shut out for the first time at home this season, 6-0 by St. Louis to drop the three-game series.

On Thursday, the Marlins will hand the ball to Sergio Mitre (4-4, 2.81), who is trying to win a career-high third straight start. The right-hander went 0-2 in seven starts from May 25-July 2, with the Marlins scoring three or fewer runs in six of those outings.

They’ve scored five runs in each of Mitre’s last two starts, and he’s won both by allowing just four runs over those 14 2-3 innings. He held Washington to two runs and six hits over 7 2-3 innings in a 5-2 win Saturday, striking out three and not issuing a walk.

Mitre threw 61 of his 85 pitches for strikes to win at home with Florida for the first time in 15 career appearances at Dolphin Stadium, including 11 starts. He induced 17 groundouts and three flyouts.

Mitre is 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA in six games - one start - against the Reds, but hasn’t faced them since 2005 while with the Chicago Cubs.

Florida second baseman Dan Uggla, batting .143 in July, is expected back in the lineup after sitting out his first game of the season Wednesday. The Marlins also said they’ll activate outfielder Cody Ross from the disabled list before Thursday’s contest after he missed more than two months with a left hamstring strain.

Pizza Play - Cards vs Marlins - 07:05 est

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

florida marlins total mlb free sports pick pizza play graffiti tommy macFlorida ace Dontrelle Willis is mired in his worst slump of 2007. St. Louis’ Kip Wells has been struggling all season.

The two pitchers look for better performances Wednesday when the Marlins and Cardinals meet in the deciding contest of their three-game series at Dolphin Stadium.

Willis (7-8, 4.81 ERA) went 7-3 in his first 12 starts, but is 0-5 with a 4.75 ERA in his last eight, allowing opponents to hit .303. The left-hander struggled in his first game after the All-Star break on Friday, allowing eight runs - three earned - and eight hits over 3 2-3 innings in a 14-10 defeat to Washington.

He walked three and didn’t record a strikeout to fall below .500 for the first time this season.

Willis hasn’t gotten much support during his slump, though, as the Marlins (45-49) have scored three or fewer runs in all but one of his last eight outings. It may be difficult for Willis to bounce back at home as he is 2-6 with a 5.07 ERA in 11 starts there and hasn’t won since April 23.

Willis is 1-2 with a 4.01 ERA in four career starts versus the Cardinals (42-48). While Willis has struggled over the last six weeks, Wells (3-12, 6.25) has yet to get it going this season.

Wells is tied with Pittsburgh’s Paul Maholm for the most losses in the majors and the Cardinals are a dismal 2-14 in his 16 starts. He was demoted to the bullpen last month and struggled in his return to the rotation on Friday when he gave up six runs - four earned - and eight hits over one-plus inning in a 13-3 defeat to Philadelphia.

The right-hander has pitched even worse on the road, going 0-8 with a 9.82 ERA in his last eight starts, allowing opponents to hit .340. Wells is 3-3 with a 2.36 ERA in seven career starts versus the Marlins, losing his last two decisions against them.

He will try to slow Florida’s Hanley Ramirez, who is batting .425 (17-for-40) with three homers and eight RBIs during a nine-game hitting streak. The Marlins’ shortstop hit a double, a homer and finished with three RBIs in Tuesday’s 4-0 win.

Florida won for just the second time in the last nine meetings between these teams. The Marlins are winless in their last six series with the Cardinals and are trying to take a set from them for the first time since Aug. 5-7, 2003.

St. Louis slugger Albert Pujols extended his hitting streak to seven games on Tuesday, batting .393 (11-for-28) during that stretch, but the Cardinals were shut out for the ninth time this season.

Milwaukee is 8-0 in Vargas’ starts at Miller Park this season, with the right-hander going 4-0 with a 4.15 ERA. Vargas (6-2, 4.52 ERA) hasn’t taken the mound since a 5-3 defeat in Pittsburgh on July 4 when he gave up five runs and six hits, including two homers, over six innings.

He’ll try to bounce back against the Diamondbacks, who he spent most of the last two seasons with, going 21-16 in 52 games. Vargas was traded to Milwaukee in the offseason along with catcher Johnny Estrada in a six-player deal that sent left-hander Doug Davis to Arizona.

Vargas has many good friends on the Arizona squad and said it may be initially tough to focus.

Vargas is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA in four career games versus Arizona.

Arizona remains without injured starter Randy Johnson and Yusmeiro Petit (1-1, 3.12 ERA) will start in his place on Tuesday. Petit was recalled to replace Johnson on July 3 and has pitched well in three appearances this season, but the Diamondbacks have failed to score a run for him in two of those outings.

The right-hander allowed three runs and five hits over five innings on July 8 in a 4-3, 11-inning defeat to Cincinnati. He walked four and struck out a career-high eight.

Petit, who is holding opponents to a .222 batting average, threw one perfect inning of relief versus Milwaukee last season while with Florida. He will try to help the Diamondbacks snap a season-high six-game road losing streak.

They’ve dropped nine of their last 10 away from home and eight of their last 11 games in Milwaukee. Chris Young, Mark Reynolds and Stephen Drew all homered on Monday, but Arizona was 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Chicago Cubs Wrigley Field free mlb major league baseball free pick graffiti tommy mac guaranteed bet

Not much has slowed down the surging Chicago Cubs over the past three weeks. Meanwhile, little has gone right for the slumping Barry Bonds recently in his pursuit of baseball’s all-time home run record.

The Cubs look to win their fourth straight game and prevent Bonds from getting closer to history at Wrigley Field when they open a four-game series against the San Francisco Giants on Monday.

Chicago (47-43) defeated Houston 7-6 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep in its first series after the All-Star break. The Cubs have won 15 of 19 overall, and are 3 1/2 games behind NL Central-leading Milwaukee after trailing by 8 1/2 games on June 23.

While Chicago has been on a roll, Bonds is hitless in a season-worst 20 consecutive at-bats after an 0-for-5 showing in Sunday’s 5-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. San Francisco (38-51) has lost four straight games and 17 of 21.

Bonds’ last homer - the 751st of his career and his 17th this season - came on July 3. He’s just 1-for-24 since.

The slugger had a hitless stretch of 21 at-bats from April 5-12, 2001 - the year he broke the single-season home run record with 73 - and had a career-worst 0-for-23 drought from July 6-20, 1986, during his rookie year.

Bonds is 0-for-2 with a walk in his career against Chicago’s Monday starter Rich Hill (5-6, 3.81 ERA), and went 3-for-16 (.188) against the Cubs last season. He did manage to homer in each of his two games at Wrigley a year ago, and has 26 home runs in 109 career games on Chicago’s North Side.

The Cubs’ play at Wrigley has triggered their turnaround. They started the year just 10-17 at home, but have won four straight and 13 of 17 there.

Chicago rallied from a five-run deficit in Sunday’s win. All-Star first baseman Derrek Lee sparked the comeback with a three-run homer - his first since June 3 - in the second inning.

The Cubs now hope Hill can return from the All-Star break rejuvenated.

Hill opened the season 4-1 with a 1.73 ERA in his first six starts, but is just 1-5 with a 5.20 ERA in his last 11 outings. The left-hander has not won since June 7, and has given up at least five runs in three of his last four starts.

In his final appearance before the break, Hill was tagged for six runs and a season-high 10 hits in six innings of a 6-0 loss to Washington on July 4.

He is 1-1 with a 3.79 ERA in three career games against the Giants.

San Francisco counters with rookie Tim Lincecum (4-2, 4.63), who looks to win his third straight start.

Lincecum has yielded just three runs in 20 innings in his last three starts after allowing 22 runs in 18 2-3 innings in his previous four.

On July 7, the 23-year-old right-hander gave up three runs and six hits in six innings of a 7-6 victory over St. Louis.

This will be his first start against the Cubs.
