Padres demote Hensley after giving up historic homer

August 5th, 2007 · No Comments

San Diego, CA - A day after becoming part of baseball history, Clay Hensley is headed back to the minors. The San Diego Padres optioned the 27-year-old right-hander to Triple-A Portland on Sunday.

Hensley surrendered Barry Bonds’ 755th career home run, tying Hank Aaron for the most in MLB history, in the second inning of San Diego’s 3-2, 12-inning win over the Giants on Saturday. Hensley did not make it out of the fifth, giving up three hits and two runs and walking five in 4 2/3 innings. He is 1-3 with a 6.18 earned run average on the season for the Padres.

The Padres recalled righty Mike Thompson from Portland to fill Hensley’s spot. Thompson, 26, was 0-1 with a 7.84 ERA in his first stint with San Diego this season, when he logged 10 1/3 innings in April.
