Thursday’s game ended with Kent in the on-deck circle ready to pinch-hit, a good sign that Friday night will find Kent in the lineup after three days on the bench nursing a strained hamstring muscle. Kent was bouncing around before Thursday’s game, taking batting and fielding practice, but he still missed his third consecutive start with a strained hamstring. Kent is likely to start Friday night. “He’s getting better,” said manager Little. “We won’t put him out there with any chance of reinjuring it.”

DETROIT - SS Carlos Guillen (knee) upgraded to probable Friday vs Chicago White Sox. Guillen didn’t start Wednesday, but struck out as a pinch-hitter to end the game. He said the left knee soreness which forced him out Tuesday’s improved overnight. Guillen expects to be back in the lineup Friday.
OF Gary Sheffield (shoulder) is “?” Friday vs Chicago White Sox. Sheffield said Wednesday that his right shoulder wasn’t getting better and was continuing to impair his swing. The club arranged for Sheffield to have a medical exam on the shoulder. Club president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said the club didn’t have any news to announce Thursday about Sheffield’s exam. Neither Sheffield nor Tigers manager Jim Leyland speculated if he might have to miss any games to rest the shoulder.
