St. Louis, MO - Anthony Reyes held the Brewers to two hits over six solid innings to avoid becoming the first-ever Cardinals pitcher to drop 13 straight decisions, and the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Milwaukee, 5-2, to sweep a day/night doubleheader at Busch Stadium.
Reyes (1-10), recalled from Triple-A Memphis to start the game, was 0-10 with a 6.40 ERA in the majors this season. He had dropped 12 straight decisions dating back to last season, matching Bill Kissinger’s franchise record set from 1896-97, and surrendered just two runs with four strikeouts and a walk and Jason Isringhausen a perfect ninth for his 20th save of the season.
David Eckstein went 2-for-5 and scored twice for the Cardinals, who scored three times in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Brewers, 7-6, in the opener of the doubleheader. Albert Pujols and Scott Rolen both finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the second game.
Corey Hart homered for the Brewers, who have lost four of five, and saw their lead in the National League Central over the second-place Cubs dwindle to 1 1/2 games . Prince Fielder doubled in the second for the only other Milwaukee hit. Left-hander Chris Capuano (5-7), who is winless since beating the Washington Nationals back on May 7, allowed four runs on six hits with four walks and six strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings for Milwaukee.
St. Louis plated three runs in the first. Eckstein lined a leadoff single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and Chris Duncan walked for Pujols, who grounded into a double play. Juan Encarnacion then walked before Rolen’s RBI double and Jim Edmonds’ two-run single.
Milwaukee scored a run in the second, as Fielder lined a lead-off double, advanced to third on Bill Hall’s fly-out, and scored on a Geoff Jenkins sacrifice fly.
The Brewers put up another run in the sixth on Hart’s homer to left field on a 1-1 pitch.
The Cardinals sealed the win with two runs in the seventh. Eckstein led off with a double and pinch-hitter Skip Schumaker bunted him over to third. Matt Wise came on to replace Capuano but allowed an RBI single to Pujols, who stole second, allowing him to score on Encarnacion’s single.

It was more of the same in the second, as Brad Hawpe drew a free pass before Tulowitzki ripped a belt-high fastball three rows deep to the bleachers in left. Yorvit Torrealba followed by legging out an infield single, and after a sac bunt by Francis, scored on Spilborghs’ single to left.
The Dodgers finally broke through in the fourth. Rafael Furcal got the club’s first hit with a bunt single. Juan Pierre moved him over with a sac bunt, and after Olmedo Saenz struck out, Kent followed with an RBI single that cut it to 5-1.

Chicago, IL - Mark Buehrle and Bobby Jenks combined on an eight-hit shutout, and Jerry Owens picked an incredibly opportune time for his first career home run, as the Chicago White Sox bested Roy Halladay and the Toronto Blue Jays, 2-0, in the second of a three-game set.
Halladay (11-5) went the distance for Toronto, taking a shutout of his own into the seventh. The Toronto ace let up 10 hits while fanning seven and walking a pair for the Blue Jays, who dropped their second straight after winning five in a row.
Buehrle (8-6) scattered eight hits over eight innings, striking out six and walking one. Jenks pitched a perfect ninth for his 30th save for the White Sox, who have won five of their last six.
Halladay worked out of a number of jams on the night, but the White Sox finally broke through in the seventh. Danny Richar, recalled from Triple-A Charlotte prior to the game for his major league debut, singled to left with one out. Owens stepped in and, on his 155th career at-bat, belted a shot to right that broke up the 0-0 game.
“That’s what I want to see from Jerry Owens,” said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. “That’s what we saw in winter ball. We want him to be aggressive.”
The White Sox had a chance to go on top in the second. With two men on base and two outs, Richar hit an infield single. Scott Podsednik tried to score from second on the play, but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Chicago again had an opportunity to break the scoreless tie in the sixth, after the first two men reached base. Jermaine Dye grounded into a double play, though, and Podsednik grounded out to the end the threat.
The Blue Jays opened the seventh with consecutive singles by Vernon Wells and Frank Thomas, but Aaron Hill flied out, Lyle Overbay struck out, and Gregg Zaun grounded out to strand the runners.
“Both pitchers were great,” said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. “We had some opportunities. That’s the kind of game you expect from Roy and Buehrle.”

Anaheim, CA - Garret Anderson’s three-run homer sparked a seven-run eighth inning as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim beat the Detroit Tigers, 10-3, in the second of a three-game series at Angel Stadium.
Jason Grilli (5-3) gave up an infield hit to Vladimir Guerrero leading off the eighth before being replaced by Tim Byrdak. Casey Kotchman sacrificed the runner to second, and Gary Matthews Jr. was intentionally walked before Anderson smacked a 1-0 pitch just over the wall in right field.
A fan appeared to reach over the railing to catch the ball, but first base umpire Ed Montague ruled it a home run. Detroit manager Jim Leyland argued that it should have been a ground-rule double but the decision was upheld.
“I don’t want to talk about it,” said Leyland. “You saw the play, you form your own opinion.”
Los Angeles scored four more in the frame. Jeff Mathis doubled and scored on Mike Rabelo’s fielding error when Reggie Willits reached with an infield single. Willits stole second and scored on Chone Figgins single to center. Jose Capellan then entered in relief for Detroit and surrendered a two-run homer to left by Orlando Cabrera, his sixth of the year.
Willits and Mathis finished with three hits apiece for the Angels, who have won three in a row and four of six. Mathis started behind the plate after the Angels placed Mike Napoli on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring earlier in the day.
“It makes me feel good that they have confidence in me,” said Mathis whose three hits matched a career-high. “It feels great to produce for the team and get a win out of it.”
Angels starter Joe Saunders went 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Scot Shields (3-3) pitched a hitless eighth inning for the win.
Magglio Ordonez homered and Carlos Guillen had two hits and an RBI for the Tigers, who have lost three in a row and five of six.
Tigers starter Andrew Miller yielded two runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts in five-plus innings.
“They have a very versatile lineup,” said Leyland. “We just didn’t get enough outs when we needed to. It’s very disturbing. We’re doing all the things that add up to losing.”
Detroit got on the board in the first. Placido Polanco singled to center and Gary Sheffield singled to left both with one-out. Two batters later, Guillen’s two-out single to left scored Polanco.
The Angels evened the score in the fifth on Willits’ two-out single to right, scoring Anderson, who walked and moved to second when Mathis singled to right.
The Tigers took a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth. After Sheffield led-off with a single to right, Ordonez smacked his 16th homer of the year to center.
Los Angeles, though, tied it in the home half. Cabrera led-off with a walk, ending Saunders’ afternoon. Grilli entered in relief for the Tigers and after inducing Guerrero to ground out, allowed pinch-hitter Kotchman’s double to center, plating Cabrera. Kotchman advanced to second when Grilli intentionally walked Anderson with two-outs and scored on Mathis’ single to left.
Game Notes
Shields recorded his 34th with the Angels, matching Dave LaRoche’s club record for victories by a reliever…To replace Napoli, the Angels purchased the contract of catcher Ryan Budde from Triple-A Salt Lake…Mathis also had three hits on October 1, 2006 against Oakland…Attendance was 43,122

Phoenix, AZ - Conor Jackson’s RBI single in the 10th inning gave the Arizona Diamondbacks a 4-3 win over the Braves, their second straight extra-inning win over Atlanta, and their eighth straight win overall.
Chris Young worked a leadoff walk in the 10th, and moved up on Orlando Hudson’s sacrifice bunt. Eric Byrnes was then intentionally walked before the Braves brought on reliever Chad Paronto to face Jackson. Paronto, on his 32nd birthday, gave up a single to center on his first pitch, and Young came around to win the game for the D-Backs.
“He’s got a good sinker, so I was looking for something early in the count,” said Jackson of Paronto. “I was looking for something over the middle of the plate, and it still kind of got in on me a little bit, I just was trying to push it into the outfield.”
Arizona edged the Braves, 8-7, on Friday thanks to a game-ending home run by Tony Clark to lead off the 11th inning.
“Our only hope was to get a double play, we tried to set that up for Chad(Paronto),” said Braves manager Bobby Cox. “He (Paronto) fisted the guy, but he (Jackson) got it out in the outfield a little bit.”
The game-winning hit capped a three-hit, two-RBI game for Jackson. Starter Doug Davis held the Braves to five hits and three runs through seven innings, striking out six and walking three, and reliever Juan Cruz (5-1) tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
John Smoltz held Arizona to seven hits and three runs through seven innings. Tyler Yates (2-3) was responsible for the winning run, and Matt Diaz had a two-run double for the Braves, who have dropped four straight.
Young put the D-Backs right on top in the first, belting his 18th homer of the season, his fourth leadoff blast this season.
Arizona added to its lead with two runs in the third. Young got things started with a one-out single to center, and moved to third on Hudson’s single to center. Byrnes drove in one run with a sacrifice fly to center, and Jackson followed with a double to left-center, giving the D-Backs a 3-0 lead.
The Braves came back with three runs in the fourth, though, to knot the game. Davis issued free passes to Chipper Jones and Jeff Francoeur, sandwiching a strikeout of Andruw Jones, and Diaz plated both with a double to left. Diaz moved up to third on Brian McCann’s groundout and, after Julio Franco was intentionally walked, Smoltz’s hard grounder to third was too hot too handle for Mark Reynolds, and Diaz came home.
Arizona did get two men on base with two outs in the ninth, but Oscar Villarreal was able to get pinch-hitter Miguel Montero to ground out to second to send the game to extras.
Game Notes
The D-Backs, who beat the Marlins on Thursday, 7-4, thanks to a three-run homer by Byrnes in the ninth, are the first team in the majors this season to have three straight walkoff wins…The Braves are 7-9 since the All-Star break…Diamondbacks minor league infielder Donnie Sadler was suspended 50 games on Saturday for testing positive for violating the minor league drug prevention and treatment program.

“I think I pitched well tonight,” Gaudin said. “It was a good game, I’m happy with it, a couple bad pitches, but it happens.”
The Athletics got off to a quick start, posting three runs in the top of the second inning. Mike Piazza got things started with a single and after Mark Ellis flied out, Dan Johnson drew a walk and Marco Scutaro singled to load the bases with one out. Murphy followed with a bases clearing double to center to give Oakland the early 3-0 advantage.
“I squirmed out of that big inning and that’s why I was able to do well today, Ramirez said. ” I made a pitch when I had to. My starts on the road I get in situations where I don’t make that pitch and I was able to do it today.”
The lead did not last long as the Mariners answered with three of their own in the bottom of the first. Adrian Beltre led off the frame with a double and advanced to second on Raul Ibanez’s fly ball to center. Richie Sexson then drew a walk, putting runners on the corners with one out.
