July 24th, 2007 · No Comments

Baltimore, MD - Daniel Cabrera tossed seven innings of one- hit ball as the Baltimore Orioles blanked the Tampa Devil Rays, 3-0, in the first of a three-game set at Camden Yards.

Cabrera (7-10) walked five and struck out three to earn his first victory since June 22. Paul Shuey gave up a leadoff walk in the eighth, but got a double play, and Jamie Walker got three outs to complete the two-hitter and earn his second save of the year for Baltimore, which has won three of four.

Chris Gomez had three hits for the Orioles, who honored Cal Ripken Jr. before the game. He will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sunday.

“For 21 seasons, Cal Ripken made a career of providing lasting memories for Orioles fans and fans of Major League Baseball,” said Orioles owner Peter Angelos in a statement. “His consistency and dependability were complimented by his ability to rise to each and every occasion.”

B.J. Upton had both hits for the Devil Rays, who have lost four in a row and 21 of 26.

Scott Kazmir (7-7) went 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Dice-K outduels C.C. for 1-0 win

July 24th, 2007 · No Comments

Cleveland, OH - Daisuke Matsuzaka scattered four hits over seven shutout innings and Mike Lowell drove in the only run of the game as Boston edged Cleveland, 1-0, in the second installment of a four-game set at Jacobs Field.

Matsuzaka (12-7) struck out five and walked three, and did not allow a runner past second base, improving to 5-2 in his last eight starts. He exacted a measure of revenge on the Tribe, who battered him for 12 hits at Fenway on May 30.

Kevin Youkilis and Manny Ramirez had two hits each for the Red Sox, winners of five in a row and owners of a major-league best 61-39 record.

C.C. Sabathia (13-5) was the hard-luck loser but lived up to his ace billing, allowing just one run and five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in seven innings. Grady Sizemore finished 2-for-4 for the Indians, who have dropped three of four.

Back-to-back one-out singles by Youkilis and Ramirez fueled the Boston fourth, and after Coco Crisp fanned on a check swing, Lowell dropped a ball just in front of Ben Francisco in left for an RBI single.

Ryan Garko began the home half with a double to extend his hit career-high hit streak to 17 games, and two batters later Trot Nixon drew a walk, but Matsuzaka worked his way through by fanning Francisco and Josh Barfield.

In the eighth, Julio Lugo doubled off the wall in left with one out, but Rafael Betancourt sent down the next two Sox in order to keep it a one-run game.

Hideki Okajima retired the side in order in the bottom half, then Jonathan Papelbon did the same in the ninth with a pair of strikeouts to record his 23rd save of the season and second in three games.

Game Notes

Matsuzaka became the first Sox rookie pitcher to win 12 games since Mike Nagy in 1969…Sabathia was the current major-league leader in wins for pitchers under the age of 28 with 94 wins coming into the contest…Cleveland is 1-3 this season in 1-0 games, and were shut out for the fifth time in 2007…Boston recorded its ninth shutout of the season…Ramirez came into the game with a scorching .571 lifetime average against Sabathia…Lugo extended his hit streak to 14 games…Okajima lowered his ERA to 0.91…Boston has converted all 15 of its save opportunities on the road this season…Attendance was 39,339.

Fielder leads Brewers over Reds in Queen City

July 24th, 2007 · No Comments

Cincinnati, OH - Prince Fielder went 2-for-4 with a triple, a pair of RBI and two runs scored, as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Cincinnati Reds, 5-3, in the second contest of a four-game set at Great American Ball Park

Yovani Gallardo started for Milwaukee and pitched 6 2/3 strong innings of one- run ball. Gallardo (3-1) scattered six hits while walking three and striking out two.

Gallardo, Damian Miller and Geoff Jenkins all knocked in a run for the Brewers, who won for the second time in their last five games.

Cincinnati starter Matt Belisle (5-7) lasted just 3 2/3 frames as the right- hander gave up four runs on six hits.

Adam Dunn hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning for the Reds, who have four losses over their last five games.

Milwaukee manufactured a run in the second to take an early lead. Fielder led things off with a walk and Kevin Mench followed with a single. The runners then moved up a base on Jenkins’ groundout, and Fielder then scored on Miller’s sacrifice fly to deep right.

The Brewers scored three runs in the fourth to increase their lead to 4-0. They took a two-run lead on Fielder’s first triple of the season. Ryan Braun singled to lead off the frame and easily scored as Fielder hit a long drive that hit off the top of the left-field wall as the ball caromed away from Dunn and into the corner. Fielder then scored on Jenkins’ ground-rule double to right for a three-run lead. Miller worked a walk before Gallardo helped himself with a base hit up the middle that scored Jenkins to make it a four- run advantage.

Cincinnati finally got on the board in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Ryan Freel opened the frame with a base hit and he scored on Scott Hatteberg’s one-out double to the gap in right to make it 4-1.

Derrick Turnbow started the eighth inning for Milwaukee and Brandon Phillips greeted him with a base hit. Dunn then launched a home run to center to pull the Reds within a run.

Fielder’s RBI single in the ninth made it a two-run contest before Francisco Cordero closed things out in the bottom of the inning for his 32nd save of the season.

Game Notes

Fielder has 74 RBI on the season…Dunn now has 27 home runs on the season and 67 RBI…The Reds ended with 10 hits while the Brewers finished with nine…Cincinnati went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base.

Rowand carries Phillies past Nationals

July 24th, 2007 · No Comments

Philadelphia, PA - Aaron Rowand went 3-for-4, hit the go- ahead solo home run in the eighth inning, and threw out a runner at the plate for good measure to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals in the first of a three-game set.

Rowand scored three times for the Phillies, who survived a so-so outing by Kyle Kendrick to win their four straight. Kendrick, who was pulled after 5 2/3 innings, let up five hits and three runs with three walks and a hit batter. Ryan Madson (2-2) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, and Antonio Alfonseca picked up his eighth save.

Brian Schneider’s three-run double provided the offense for the Nationals, who hung in despite losing starter Jason Bergmann after 2 1/3 innings to tightness in his left hamstring. Bergmann allowed four hits and two runs. Luis Ayala (0-2) served up Rowand’s homer to take the loss for Washington, which had won four of five entering the game.

Ayala was brought in with two outs in the eighth to handle the right-handed Rowand, but hung a pitch low and over the plate that Rowand golfed deep into the leftfield stands to put the Phils on top.

Alfonseca rebounded from a leadoff walk to Austin Kearns and, after a nice diving stop of a Schneider grounder by Chase Utley for the first out, fanned Ryan Langerhans and got pinch-hitter Robert Fick to ground out to end the game.

Carlos Ruiz’s clutch double into the left-center gap with two outs and runners at the corners plated the first run for the Phils in the second.

The Nats had a chance to tie the game in the third when, with runners at first and second and two outs, Ronnie Belliard singled to center. Bergmann was waved home from third, though, and was gunned down by a sizeable margin by Rowand, ending the inning.

The play at the plate apparently had an effect on the Washington starter, who gave up a leadoff blast to Rollins in the third and, after issuing a one-out walk to Utley, left the game.

Billy Traber pitched well in his absence, though, and Nats took the lead when Kendrick scuffled in the fourth. After allowing a leadoff double to Ryan Zimmerman, Kendrick issued a one-out walk to Ryan Church, and beaned Kearns to load the bases. Schneider came through for the Nats with a line drive into the gap in left-center, clearing the bases.

The Phillies tied things in the sixth when Rowand roped a one-out double to right, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Pat Burrell’s sacrifice fly.

Game Notes

Philadelphia’s run in the second ended a 22-inning scoreless streak for Nationals pitchers, who had last been scored on in the seventh inning of their 3-1 loss to the Rockies on July 20…The Nationals are 10-9 in July. They are looking to record their first winning month of the season.

Another blanking as Jays jolt Twins

July 24th, 2007 · No Comments

Toronto, ON - Dustin McGowan twirled 7 1/3 scoreless innings and Vernon Wells drove in four runs, as the Toronto Blue Jays downed the Minnesota Twins, 7-0, in game two of a three-game series at Rogers Centre.

John McDonald added two RBI for the Blue Jays, who have won four in a row — three of them by way of shutout. The four straight wins matches a season-best.

McGowan (7-5) scattered just four hits while striking out five and walking three. This is the first time he has posted back-to-back wins since early June.

Scott Baker (4-4) yielded four runs on six hits over seven frames for Minnesota, which has lost six of eight.

Toronto scored in the third to assume a 1-0 lead. Aaron Hill led off with a double, moved to third on Gregg Zaun’s base hit, then scored on McDonald’a bunt.

Wells cracked a two-run homer in the fourth to increase the advantage to 3-0. After Troy Glaus’ leadoff single, Wells stepped in and launched Baker’s offering over the wall in left for his 14th home run of the year.

In the top-half of the fourth it appeared Torii Hunter was going to score following Rondell White’s double, when a throw in from the outfield missed the cut-off man. Lyle Overbay made a nice play to track the ball down and flip it home, however, nabbing Hunter to keep the shutout intact.

That allowed the Blue Jays to go ahead by four in the seventh thanks to doubles from Hill and McDonald.

Wells put the game away in the eighth with a two-run double, then scored on Frank Thomas’ base hit in the next sequence.

Brandon League worked around a leadoff double in the ninth to keep the Twins off the board.

Game Notes

Baker was unbeaten in his last three starts coming in, going 2-0 with a no- decision while allowing 24 hits and 12 runs in 17 1/3 innings…Minnesota stranded seven runners…Attendance was 30,669.

Rheinecker carries Texas to win in opener of DH

July 24th, 2007 · No Comments

Arlington, TX - John Rheinecker dominated the Mariners for seven innings, and the Texas Rangers held on for a 2-1 win over Seattle in the first game of a doubleheader.

Rheinecker (1-0), in just his second start of the season and the 15th of his career, quieted the Mariners’ offense, allowing only six hits and one unearned run, striking out four and walking one. Marlon Byrd went 2-for-3 with an RBI triple for the Rangers, who have won three of four.

Joaquin Benoit pitched a scoreless eighth, and Eric Gagne picked up his 15th save.

Ryan Feierabend (1-4), recalled from Triple-A Tacoma Tuesday to make the start, kept the Rangers in the game in his ninth career start, allowing six hits and two runs through five innings with two strikeouts and no walks. Jason Ellison went 2-for-3, the only player with multiple hits for the Mariners, who have lost four straight.

The Mariners, looking to rebound from a tough 8-7 loss on Monday’s series opener, plated a run in the first. Jose Lopez worked a one-out walk, moved up to third when Michael Young’s error allowed Jose Guillen to reach second, and scored on Adrian Beltre’s groundout.

The Rangers knotted the game in the fourth. Sammy Sosa laced a two-out double to left, and came home on Byrd’s triple, his sixth of the season, in the gap in left-center.

Texas then moved on top with another two-out run in the fifth. Travis Metcalf got the two-out rally started with a double to left, and Frank Catalanotto’s single put runners at the corners. Young then singled into left, scoring the go-ahead run.

Kenji Johjima roped a leadoff single to left in the ninth for Seattle, but that was as close to tying the game as the Mariners would get. Young speared pinch-hitter Jose Vidro’s hard one-hopper to short and threw to second for the fielder’s choice, and Gagne fanned pinch-hitters Ben Broussard and Raul Ibanez to end the game.

Game Notes

To clear space for Feierabend, the Mariners optioned pitcher Ryan Rowland- Smith to Tacoma on Tuesday…Seattle left eight men on base.

Chicago, IL - Paul Konerko hit a two-run home run and drove in three as the Chicago White Sox downed the Detroit Tigers, 5-3, in the first game of a day/night doubleheader at U.S. Cellular Field.

NBA Refs “Gambling Jones” - Gambling Problem for NBA

July 24th, 2007 · No Comments

NBA basketball, NBA gambling, NBA Scandal, Referee Betting, graffiti wall, tommy mac

David Stern and the NBA in many ways are well ahead of the National Football League. For example, unlike the NFL, Stern’s NBA has taken the lead in protecting its former players. The NBA, however, has also worked hard to force sports betting underground. The league itself was behind a measure that seeks to ban online gambling - the UIGEA (a law now being challenged in the court system).

Proponents of online gambling like chairmanship of the House Financial Services Committee, Barney Frank, insist that regulation of online gambling is the only way to go. The recent controversy surrounding “rogue NBA ref” Tim Donaghy supports Frank’s argument.

While some politicians, special interest groups and the sports leagues will be quick to say “We told you so”, alluding to sports betting’s potential harm to the integrity of the sport itself, these same individuals need to realize they are making matters far worse by pushing the activity underground.

“98% of those who gamble online or in casinos for that matter do so for entertainment purposes,” claims Bet33.com Floor Manager , Zack Williams.” The other 2% have serious issues and do not care who they harm. The UIGEA and the NBA’s attempts to have online gambling banned only harms the 98% who bet on sports for fun. The other 2% will continue to find ways of gambling with disreputable underground betting operations.”

The NBA may try to pass the buck as another “gambling jones problem”, but that won’t be easy, argues Tommy Mac www.tommymac.com and editor of: Betting Odds - Graffiti Wall website. “The NBA itself is the one with the smoking gun in this story,” he says.

Stern spoke at a news conference Tuesday morning where he addressed the “NBA rogue ref” scandal, calling it the “darkest times of his 23 years as commissioner”, and probably not one that is going away any time soon.

Henry Abbott of ESPN’s Hoops Talk offered some interesting observations made during this press conference:

If I’m not mistaken, David Stern somehow made it through all of the press conference (at least the part that I saw before my feed froze) without once saying the words “mob” or “mafia.” He didn’t even make a passing reference, and the only question he really got about that angle he ignored completely. I can imagine why he had that approach — it’s a thicket of bad PR and legal complications — but all the same, it seems odd not to at least address the notion that the mob might have been influencing games.

And…

Stern went to great lengths to explain the fancy background and asset checks that the league has been doing on referees for the last two years, but no one that I saw asked about the reported million dollar Florida home that is said to have raised eyebrows with at least one of Donaghy’s colleagues.

David Stern seemed to have Costa Rica’s and Las Vegas’s back a little. He volunteered at a moment when it seemed a bit forced that it was his understanding that the bets Donaghy is said to have placed were not through Las Vegas. He also said that he canceled a scheduled meeting about how Las Vegas and Costa Rica might fit into the NBA’s future because it seemed unseemly at this time.

His Majesty has spoken: Stern addresses Donaghy issue

New York, NY - NBA Commissioner David Stern met with the media Tuesday to discuss the gambling investigation of former league referee Tim Donaghy.

Donaghy is under investigation by the FBI for allegedly betting on and fixing games that he worked during the past two seasons, in a gambling scam that reportedly involved members of the organized crime community in New York.

Choosing his words very carefully because of the ongoing investigation, Stern called it “the most serious situation and worst situation that I have ever experienced — either as a fan of the NBA, or as a lawyer for the NBA or as commissioner of the NBA.”

Stern spoke for more than an hour, first illustrating the guidelines for officials and the league’s security system that involves former FBI officials, Secret Service and police. He then tried to give as many details about the investigation into the alleged gambling scandal.

According to Stern’s timeline, the league was notified of the investigation, and Donaghy’s alleged involvement, on June 20 and could not take action without hindering the process. Donaghy then resigned on July 9, 11 days before the story broke in a New York Post report on July 20.

“We understand that [Donaghy] is accused of betting on games in the NBA,” Stern said. “We’re not positive it’s games that he worked, although I understand it was some games that he worked. I understand that, maybe, he bet on other games in which he didn’t work.

“I understand that he is accused of, or will likely be accused of, providing information to others for the purpose of allowing them to profit on betting on NBA games.

“I don’t know the number of games. I don’t know which games, and until this moment I have not deployed substantial amount of people to do the work that would be necessary to satisfy us because I felt constrained by the FBI’s request that we not communicate this to anybody, and so the smallest number of people possible knew this in the NBA office.

“On July 9, Mr. Donaghy resigned. Suffice it to say that we would liked to have terminated him earlier upon learning of certain things, but it was our understanding that the investigation would best be aided if we did not, so we did not and he resigned.

“We understand the relative time period being investigated is the past two seasons — 2005-06 and 2006-07. I can tell you that during that period of time, Mr. Donaghy refereed 139 regular-season games, eight playoff games and four preseason games.

“I also understand that Mr. Donaghy is the only referee who is alleged to have bet on NBA games and disclosed confidential information to others, with respect to NBA games that would enable them to place wagers with an advantage.

“I understand this is an isolated case involving an NBA referee engaged, not only in violation of our rules, but in criminal conduct. I await the outcome of the investigation by the NBA and the determination by the Justice Department to what they are going to do with it.”

Stern refuted reports that said the league knew of Donaghy’s betting activities this season and still allowed him to work. He said there was league knowledge of a prior incident Donaghy had in a dispute with a neighbor while he lived in Pennsylvania.

The dispute, according to Stern, occurred in January of 2005 and the league was unhappy with the issue. Donaghy was unable to work playoff games that season as punishment and he soon moved to Florida because Stern said the league threatened the official’s job if the problem had persisted.

Stern also said there were allegations of Donaghy gambling in Atlantic City, something officials are prohibited from by the NBA. An investigation into those allegations came up negative.

Gambling of any kind, other than horse racing in the offseason, is prohibited for NBA officials, although Stern said “we are going to re-visit everything,” in relation to officiating.

Everything apparently includes the system used to review game work by officials. Stern said the system was instituted to help officials develop and improve, and it was not put in place to check into potential criminal activity, although he added that could now change.

Stern also noted that the league will do its best to restore the credibility of the games.

“We take our obligation to our fans in this matter very, very seriously,” Stern stated. “I can stand here today and pledge that we will do every look back possible to analyze our processes and seek the best advice possible to see if there are changes that should be made and procedures that should be implemented to continue to assure our fans that we’re doing the best we possibly can.

“Doing the best you can doesn’t always mean that criminal activity by a determined person can be prevented. All you can do in many cases is deal with it as harshly as you can when you determine it and hope that acts as a deterrent.

“If there is anything that is possible, virtually regardless of cost, we plan to pursue that and to, in effect, re-affirm our covenant with our fans that the NBA is a product that will remain proud of its officiating staff, which we believe is the best in the world, and that our games are decided on their merits.”

Stern said he felt “betrayed” by what happened, but still said he believed it was an isolated incident.

“We think we have a rogue, isolated criminal,” Stern reiterated. “I still have to be protective of my officials, including those who likely have been and will continue to be unfairly besmirched because of the allegations that have been made against Mr. Donaghy.

“By and large, they get it right most of the times. They get it wrong sometimes. They do their darndest to get the result right.”

In one of his closing statements, Stern was adamant about restoring the league’s good name.

“I think we are going to regain the confidence of our fans,” he said.
