The Detroit Tigers stumbled over the weekend with a series loss to the lowly Kansas City Royals. They’ll try to bounce back against another of the AL Central’s lesser teams Monday when they begin a five-game set against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.
Detroit, which is 12-5 this month, lost two of three over the weekend to the Royals, dropping Sunday’s series finale 5-2. The Tigers (58-38) tried to make a comeback in the ninth inning after Magglio Ordonez hit an RBI double to put two runners on with no outs, but Detroit failed to bring in another run.
It was the Tigers’ first series defeat since losing two of three to Minnesota from June 29-July 1.
With the Royals’ win on Sunday and Chicago’s 8-5 loss to Boston later in the day, the White Sox (43-54) fell into a last-place tie with Kansas City. It’s the latest they have been in last since the final day of the 1989 season.
Chicago was outscored 29-10 in the final three games of its series with the Red Sox after opening the set with a 4-2 win on Thursday.
After finishing its road trip with a 4-7 record, Chicago returns to U.S. Cellular Field, where it has the fewest home wins in the majors (19).
The White Sox now turn to Mark Buehrle (7-5, 2.91 ERA), who has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last eight starts. The left-hander gave up one run and 10 hits in 6 1-3 innings to beat Cleveland 5-1 on Wednesday.
Monday will be Buehrle’s first start at home since signing a four-year, $56 million extension on July 8.
Buehrle is 3-3 with a 3.00 ERA in 10 starts at home this season. He is 11-7 with a 2.92 ERA in 20 starts and one relief appearance against the Tigers. The 11 wins are the third most he has against any team, trailing only Minnesota (19) and Kansas City (16).
Ordonez, who played with the White Sox from 1997-2004, is 7-for-12 with two homers off Buehrle. Overall, he is hitting .339 against his former team.
Detroit counters with Andrew Miller (5-3, 3.18), who has alternated wins and losses in his last seven starts. He allowed one run and four hits in five innings Wednesday in a 3-2 victory over the Twins.
Miller made one relief appearance against the White Sox last season, allowing one hit in 1 2-3 innings.
Chicago has won 13 of the last 20 home meetings against the Tigers. These teams will play a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday to make up an April 26 rainout.
NOTES: The thing I like about both Miller and Buehrle is they get the ball and throw it, so quick work for both of these guys.

NY NEWSDAY
July 23, 2007
Of the 139 games officiated by Tim Donaghy during the past two NBA seasons, the opening point spread moved at least two points in 28 of them, or 20 percent, according to a source within the Nevada sports betting industry.
The trend, along with dramatic free-throw differentials in several of Donaghy’s games, could provide important evidence to the NBA and federal authorities investigating whether the referee bet on games he officiated or furnished information to bettors as part of a possible point-shaving or game-fixing scandal.
Bookmakers pay close attention to the movement in betting lines because they often indicate that more money is being wagered on the team in whose favor the line moves. Two-point movements in NBA lines are common and can result from legitimate strategic factors such as the absence of a key player because of injury.
It is difficult to pinpoint any possible discrepancies in Donaghy’s officiating without data kept only by the NBA on how many fouls he personally called - and, just as important, the players he called them against.
But games officiated by Donaghy, particularly those in which point-spread movements occurred, are under intense scrutiny as part of an FBI investigation of possible point-shaving headed by Eastern District federal prosecutors in Brooklyn. Law enforcement sources have told Newsday that Donaghy, 40, is expected to surrender to authorities as early as tomorrow or Wednesday.
The Knicks were involved in at least two of the games that raised a red flag for the gambling source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation.
When the Knicks hosted Miami on Feb. 26 this year, the opening line favored the Knicks by 3 and moved to 4.5. The Knicks shot 31 more free throws than Miami (39-8) and won 99-93.
On Jan. 2, 2006, Donaghy officiated the Phoenix-Knicks game at the Garden; the opening line favored the Suns by 6.5 and closed at 6. The Knicks enjoyed a 54-16 free-throw advantage - the largest of any game Donaghy officiated in the past two seasons - and won, 140-133, in triple overtime.
Those were among 16 games Donaghy officiated in 2005-06 and 2006-07 in which the home team shot at least 14 more free throws than the visitors, the source said. In five of those games, the home team shot at least 20 more free throws. Donaghy also officiated two games in which the visiting team enjoyed a free-throw advantage of at least 20.
When Memphis played at Utah on Nov. 19, 2005, the Grizzlies initially were favored by 5. The line increased to 7, and Memphis shot 19 more free throws (30-11) than the Jazz in an 80-72 victory.
On Dec. 18, 2006, Washington opened as a 2 1/2-point favorite at Denver. The line increased to 3.5 points, largely because of suspensions for Carmelo Anthony and Nene. The undermanned Nuggets shot 44 free throws compared to Washington’s 18 and won easily, 117-108.
Of the eight playoff games Donaghy officiated in the past two seasons, two raised red flags for the Nevada betting source.
On April 28, 2006, the line favoring the host Lakers over the Suns moved a half-point in L.A.’s favor. The Lakers won and covered, 99-92, enjoying a 23-17 free-throw advantage with 22 fouls called on Phoenix and 14 on the Lakers. Four of the Suns’ five starters finished with at least four fouls.
On April 29, 2007, the result was flipped. The Suns opened as a 4 1/2-point favorite, the line increased to 6 and Phoenix won by 13 - 113-100 - with a 31-17 free-throw advantage.
But several games in the Donaghy file don’t fit the profile of a fixer, the source said, highlighting how difficult it will be for the NBA and federal authorities to build their case against him.
For example, the 76ers were favored to beat the Raptors by one point at home on Jan. 15, 2007, but heavy betting on Toronto resulted in the closing line favoring the Raptors by 1. Toronto won in a blowout, 104-86, and 21 fouls were called on each team.
Two nights later, heavy wagering on Phoenix for its game at Houston increased the point spread favoring the Suns from 4 1/2 to 8. The Suns won, 100-91, but each team shot only 12 free throws. Houston stars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady missed the game with injuries, accounting for much of the betting line movement.
Another anomaly: In Game 6 of the 2007 first-round series between the Nets and Raptors, the line opened at 3 points favoring the Nets at home and closed at 5. That result would’ve been under scrutiny, but only by any fixers who might’ve been involved. The Nets failed to cover in a 98-97 series-clinching victory and had only a slight free-throw advantage (29-25).
“If [Donaghy] was involved there, he’s in trouble,” the Nevada source said. “And not with the NBA.”

The Seattle Mariners continue to push forward in their attempt to take over the top spot in the American League West. Although the club has gone just 5-5 since the All-Star break, a recent slump by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim now has Seattle finding itself just two games out of first place in the division standings.
The Mariners’ climb towards the top has not been an easy one, as they have trailed the Angels by as many as eight games over the last month. Seattle’s resurgence began about three weeks ago, as they won nine of 10 games to close out the month of June. The winning carried over into early July and at 13 games above .500 (54-41), Seattle is very much alive in both the races for the AL West crown and the league’s wild card spot.
The Mariners closed the gap in AL West earlier this week by taking two out of three games from the Baltimore Orioles. However, they failed to capitalize on the momentum, as they dropped two out of three games to the Toronto Blue Jays over the weekend.
Seattle opened the series with a 4-2 win on Friday night. Starter Miguel Batista earned his 10th win of the season, limiting the Blue Jays to just two runs on five hits through 5 2/3 innings. The Mariners’ bullpen took care of the rest, holding the Blue Jays scoreless over the final 3 1/3 innings. Closer J.J. Putz continued his dominance by collecting his 29th save of the season.
Seattle registered just six hits in the win, but received a two-run homer from Adrian Beltre in the fourth inning to take control of the game.
Friday’s win would be the last for Seattle, as it dropped two straight to end the series. The Mariners lost a 1-0 heartbreaker on Saturday despite an outstanding effort from starter Jeff Weaver. The right-hander was dominant in the loss, allowing just one run on four hits through eight innings. However, the Mariners’ struggles at the plate continued, as they collected just three hits in the loss.
Seattle’s hitting problems were evident again during Sunday’s 8-0 setback, as the Mariners were held to a meaningless three hits for a second straight day.
Starting pitcher Felix Hernandez was saddled with the loss after surrendering six runs on seven hits through six innings. The Mariners also suffered a meltdown in the fifth inning that led to the ejection of manager John McLaren.
SUZUKI SIGNED THROUGH 2012
Although the trade deadline is still a week away, the Mariners have already made their most important move of the season by re-signing center fielder Ichiro Suzuki to a five-year contract extension. The re-signing was a must for Seattle, which would have had to go through a bidding war for Suzuki during the offseason.
Suzuki did not come cheap, signing for a reported $90 million over the next five years, but the deal, which was finalized on July 13, will keep the All- Star in Seattle through the 2012 season.
Signing Suzuki before the offseason gives merit to the Mariners’ stance that they are dedicated to building a winner. Ichiro has been the cornerstone of the franchise since joining Seattle in 2000. He has more than 200 hits in each of his seven major league seasons while earning a Gold Glove in each of the past six years.
Suzuki has continued to thrill this season, batting .346 with 136 hits on the year. Just two weeks ago, he recorded the first inside-the-park home run in All-Star Game history on his way to being named the contest’s MVP. He became the first Mariner to garner the honor since Ken Griffey Jr. did so in 1992.
Suzuki’s deal includes much more than the reported $90 million in guaranteed salary. The Japanese star will also receive a $5 million signing bonus, a yearly housing allowance, a new car, a personal trainer and interpreter, plus four first class tickets from Seattle to Japan each year.
Executive vice president Bill Bavasi spoke about the importance of re-signing Suzuki and what the outfielder has meant to the Mariners and the city of Seattle.
“This is a tremendously important day for our ballclub, the club’s fans and for Ichiro, but more importantly, it’s a real exciting day for us,” Bavasi said. “Ichiro is a cornerstone that you use to build a winning club. He plays hard, he plays the game right, he sets a great example for our younger players, and any players, just based on his dedication and his preparation.”
As for Ichiro, he is happy to be able to call Seattle home for the next five seasons.
“Well, I can’t say there was a particular day that I decided [to stay],” said Suzuki. “But during the season we go to different teams, different places on the road, and the fans from opposing teams always told me, ‘Please come here, please come to our team,’ in many different places. To be honest, I was moved during those times, and also the fans in Japan [who] asked me to come back to Japan to play. But in the end, when I came back to Seattle and the fans here asked me to stay here, that was a moment that meant the most to me and that’s when I decided.”
REITSMA GIVES PEN A BOOST
Chris Reitsma’s return to the Seattle bullpen has given the Mariners a solid right-handed set-up man. Unfortunately, the Mariners will be unable to gauge Reitsma’s long term affect until he proves that he can be called upon on a nightly basis. The oft-injured hurler has spent the majority of this season on the disabled list, missing time from April 19 to June 4 with an elbow injury only to go back on the DL from June 11 to July 5 for the same reason.
Reitsma has been solid since re-joining the club earlier this month, having allowed just one run over his last four appearances. He has shown power and control on the mound and has given the Mariners another option in the late innings. However, the right-hander has yet to pitch on consecutive nights and many in the organization are unsure as to how his elbow will respond.
If Reitsma is able to regain full strength and become a solid reliever, the Mariners may have found the missing piece to a run at the AL West crown. However, if his troublesome elbow limits his playing time, the Mariners may have to hit the market in search of another setup man.
Reitsma is confident that his elbow is ready for the test. He has dealt with elbow problems in the past and believes that he is more than ready to pitch on back-to-back nights.
“At this point in time, I feel I am fully able to do that,” he said. “I realize there are going to be days when I wake up after pitching the night before and my elbow will ache a little. But I don’t anticipate anything happening to debilitate me the rest of the way. If it stays like this, I definitely can pitch in back-to-back games.”
McLaren will be proactive in testing Reitsma’s endurance, but is not going to do anything that may jeopardize the health of his already-stellar bullpen.
“When you are coming off an injury, pitching back-to-back is one step back,” McLaren said. “We had that issue with (Brandon) Morrow, because he had never done it before. We got over that hurdle a little bit and now we have to do the same with Chris.”
WHO’S HOT
Designated hitter Jose Vidro has been hot out of the break, hitting safely in five of his last six games and going 15-for-39 (.385) at the plate since July 6. Vidro, who is a career .301 hitter, is batting .299 with 47 runs scored this season.
WHO’S NOT
Raul Ibanez is battling through a slump right now, going just 4-for-35 at the plate over his last 10 games. He has gone hitless in four of his last five outings and was a pitiful 1-for-12 during the Toronto series. The outfielder is batting .258 with six home runs and 57 RBI on the season.
ON DECK
The Mariners will travel to Arlington for a four-game set against the Texas Rangers beginning Monday. The opener will feature Horacio Ramirez (5-2, 5.89) and Texas ace Kevin Millwood (6-8, 5.50). Tuesday’s double-header will kick off with a showdown between Mariners lefty Jarrod Washburn (8-7, 4.02) and John Rheinecker (0-0. 12.00), with Ryan Feierabend (1-3, 9.31) pitching the nightcap for Seattle opposite Kameron Loe (5-8, 5.69). Wednesday night’s finale will feature Batista (10-7, 4.32) and Brandon McCarthy (4-7, 5.53).

Edmonton, AB Canada - Sebastien Bourdais captured Sunday’s Rexall Grand Prix Edmonton with relative ease. The three-time series champion crossed the finish line 3.947 seconds ahead of Justin Wilson.
The victory was Bourdais’ fourth of the season and 27th of his Champ Car career.
“It’s a great win and a great team effort,” said Bourdais. “The car was spot on plus the great pit stops is what won us the race.”
Bourdais got the jump on pole winner Will Power driving around the outside of turn one to grab the early race lead. The Frenchman knew what to do with the lead and quickly built a margin of more than one second.
Bourdais and Power remained one-two, but Bourdais was also gradually pulling away from Power and the margin was 2.672 seconds after 19 laps when a debris caution slowed the race and sent everyone down pit lane for the first round of pit stops.
Bourdais had a little trouble on the stop and both Power and Wilson beat the No.1 Newman/Haas/Lanigan driver back on track.
Power still had a lot of speed and with clean air out front he would be tough to get around. In just a couple of laps he led Wilson by 2.451 seconds and Bourdais by 4.160 seconds. Wilson fought back and after posting a fastest lap on lap 41 cut the lead to 1.060 seconds.
It was time for the second round of pit stops, but unlike the first time, these were made under green flag conditions. Power was the first of the leaders to stop, on lap 50, giving up the lead to Wilson. Wilson was next with Bourdais the last of the leaders to come in which meant he could put in an extra lap while light on fuel - usually a faster lap.
The strategy worked as Bourdais returned to the track ahead of both Wilson and Power. In fact, it worked so well that Bourdais’ lead was more than three seconds.
Bourdais continued to expand on the lead over Wilson while Graham Rahal moved into third place around a slowing Power. Power’s laps were almost two seconds slower than the Frenchman’s and he fell more than 15 seconds off the pace.
On lap 62, Bourdais set a race lap record as his lead ballooned to 7.197 seconds. He did it again on the next lap as the margin was now more than eight seconds.
Power made an unscheduled stop on lap 65 and it appeared to be a steering problem causing his slow times. He would not leave his pit, he was done for the day.
All Bourdais’ hard work went up in smoke when Alex Tagliani and points leader Robert Doornbos crashed on lap 69 in turn one. Doornbos managed to continue on, but Tagliani brought out the caution flag when he couldn’t continue on.
The entire field hit pit road for their final stops of the day. Bourdais won the race back to the track and was closely followed by Wilson, Rahal and Simon Pagenaud.
On the restart with 21 minutes to go, Bourdais went about the business of rebuilding his lead. Two laps later it was 1.781 seconds. With 10 minutes remaining the gap was 4.065 seconds and it was just a matter of maintaining that lead to the checkered flag.
The top-four finished just as they had started the final stint - Bourdais, Wilson, Rahal and Pagenaud.
With the win and Doornbos’ problems, Bourdais has grabbed the championship lead. The soon-to-be Formula One driver is 21 points ahead of Doornbos (195-174) and 27 ahead of Power.
The next race in the series is set for Sunday, July 29th on the streets of San Jose, California.

Toronto, Canada - Mauro Zarate scored in the 86th minute to give Argentina a 2-1 comeback win against the Czech Republic in the final of the U-20 World Cup.
Martin Fenin put the Czech’s ahead on the hour mark, but Sergio Aguero equalized four minutes later and Zarate clinched Argentina’s sixth U-20 World Cup title with just minutes to play.
Fenin’s goal came on the heels of a sloppy first half, but Argentina was able to grab the tying goal as Ever Banega slid a nice through-ball to Aguero, who worked his way behind the defense and slid home his tournament-leading sixth goal to even the match.
The game looked as though it would require extra time, but Zarate came through with the game-winner. He took a pass on the left of the goal and turned with the ball before drilling a hard shot at the near post. The ball had plenty of pace and Czech keeper Radek Petr was only able to get a piece of the shot before it crossed the goal line.
The win only reaffirms Argentina’s dominance in the competition as the South American giants have now captured five of the last seven U-20 World Cups.

South Bend, IN - Bobby Bowden, the winningest coach in major college football history, led a group that was enshrined into the College Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.
Other notables included former Heisman Trophy winners Mike Rozier and Charlie Ward, as well as defensive standout Bruce Smith and the NFL’s all-time leading rusher Emmitt Smith.
Bowden turned Florida State into a perennial power since taking over in 1976, guiding the Seminoles to 29 bowl appearances and a pair of national championships while accruing a staggering 286 wins in 365 games. He is the only head coach to guide an NCAA team to at least 11 straight bowl victories.
Penn State coach Joe Paterno was also enshrined as was Bruce Smith, who was a fierce defensive lineman for Virginia Tech before starting a sensational pro career with the Buffalo Bills in 1985. A two-time First-Team All-American, Smith set Hokie records for single-game sacks (four), single-season sacks (22) and career sacks (46). He made 180 career tackles during his college career from 1981-84.
Emmitt Smith had similar success on the offensive end during his playing days with the University of Florida from 1987-89. Smith set 58 school records with the Gators and amassed 3,928 yards and 36 touchdowns in just three seasons. Prior to winning three Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys, Smith was a unanimous First-Team All-American and an SEC Player of the Year while with the Gators.
Ward is one of the most accomplished college football players ever, winning a national championship, a Heisman Trophy and a slew of other accolades as signal-caller for Florida State from ‘91-93. He is a two-time ACC Player of the Year winner and broke 19 school records before opting to play for the New York Knicks rather than try his hand at the NFL upon graduation.
Rozier, a former Nebraska running back, ran for 2,148 yards in 1983 alone to become only the second player in NCAA history to reach the 2,000-yard plateau in a single season. He set NCAA records for single-season rushing yards per game (179) and rushing TDs (29) en route to a Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award. Rozier played eight seasons in the NFL with the Oilers and Atlanta Falcons.
The rest of the 2006 Class consisted of running back Bobby Anderson (Colorado, 1967-69); defensive back Bennie Blades (Miami-Florida, ‘85-87); tackle Carl Eller (Minnesota, ‘61-63); defensive lineman Steve Emtman (Washington, ‘89-91); safety Thomas Everett (Baylor, ‘83-86); defensive lineman Chad Hennings (Air Force, ‘84-87); offensive lineman Chip Kell (Tennessee, ‘68-70); quarterback Mike Phipps (Purdue, ‘67-69); and linebacker Jeff Siemon (Stanford, ‘68-71)
