X-rays taken recently on Berkman’s left hand were negative, but he is scheduled to miss Saturday’s game with hopes that some time off will reduce the swelling and bruising that has hampered him for much of the season. Because the Astros were slated to face left-handers in the first two games of the series with the Pirates, manager Garner figured that, coupled with Thursday’s off-day, this would be a perfect time to give Berkman a chance to heal. “Just the way the schedule sets up, it makes sense with the day off and two lefties in a row,” Berkman said.
