With soccer knocker sensation David Beckham set to make his American debut, online bookmakers wait to see if the superstar transplant will have any significant impact on the betting field.
While most of the major betting shops are offering betting odds on such things as Odds to win the UEFA Champions League, Spanish Premera Liga and even the 2008 World Cup, one will be hard pressed to find future betting odds on Major League Soccer in the US. That’s because the oddsmakers and gamblers alike believe that the LA Galaxy will inevitably win with David Beckham making a splash on that team.
Just 73 seconds into his remarks Friday at a news conference celebrating his arrival with the Los Angeles Galaxy, David Beckham apologized.
“For me, the most important thing is my family,” Beckham said. “The second thing is footb … is the soccer. I’ll get used to that at some point. I’m sorry.
“This is one of the biggest challenges I’ve ever taken on in my career,” Beckham said at the news conference, which was carried on ESPNEWS. “To move to a different country, the other side of the world, is something that I’m looking forward to. I think potentially in the States, soccer could be as big as it is around the world.”
The spotlight is on the sport as it never has been in a non-World Cup year according to Pete Grathoff of the Kansas City Star. This week, Beckham has graced the cover of Sports Illustrated and USA Today. He and his wife, Victoria, also had a racy spread in W magazine.
Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber took part in the pomp and circumstance at the Galaxy’s field, the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
“It’s very fair to say that this is truly a historic day for the sport of soccer in America, here in Los Angeles and in the history of the LA Galaxy,” Garber gushed.
