MLB Interleague Final Scores & Recap

June 16th, 2007 · No Comments

(Friday, June 15th)

Final Score: NY Mets 2, NY Yankees 0

Bronx, NY - Oliver Perez combined with three relievers on a five-hit shutout as the New York Mets blanked the New York Yankees and Roger Clemens, 2-0, to snap the Bronx Bombers’ nine-game winning streak. The Mets, who halted a five-game skid and won for just the second time in 11 games, won the old fashioned way — with pitching and spectacular defense. Perez (7-5) allowed five hits while walking three and fanning six over 7 1/3 innings to earn the win. Billy Wagner hurled a perfect ninth to pick up his 15th save. Jose Reyes finished 3-for-3 with a solo home run, three stolen bases and two runs batted in, and David Wright was 1-for-3 and extended his hitting streak to a career-best 16 games. Derek Jeter was 2-for-4 with a double for the Yankees, who fell 8 1/2 games behind Boston in the AL East. Bobby Abreu finished 0-for-3 to halt a 13-game hitting streak. Clemens (1-1) followed up his much ballyhooed return to the Bronx, a 9-3 win over Pittsburgh last Saturday, with another solid if unspectacular performance. The 44-year old right-hander allowed two runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings while walking one and fanning eight en route to the loss.

Final Score: Toronto 7, Washington 2

Toronto, ON - Troy Glaus homered and finished with three RBI to guide the Toronto Blue Jays past the Washington Nationals, 7-2, in the opener of a three-game interleague set at Rogers Centre. Adam Lind added a two-run shot while ace Roy Halladay put together another quality outing for the Blue Jays, who have won two in a row. Halladay (7-2) allowed two runs on seven hits over 7 1/3 frames while striking out six. He is 3-0 in four starts since returning from a three-week stint on the disabled list due to appendicitis. Mike Bacsik (1-4) took the loss after giving up three runs in 4 1/3 innings for Washington, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. Ryan Langerhans’ two-run homer accounted for his team’s offense.

Final Score: Atlanta 5, Cleveland 4

Cleveland, OH - Yunel Escobar hit a two-run double off C.C. Sabathia in the ninth inning as the Atlanta Braves rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians in the opener of a three-game interleague set. Casey Blake’s homer in the eighth inning give Cleveland a 4-3 lead and extend his hitting streak to 24 games. Sabathia, looking to finish the game, stayed on for the ninth and Jarrod Saltalamacchia greeted him with a double to left field that was just out of reach of a diving David Dellucci. Brian McCann then reached base as shortstop Jhonny Peralta couldn’t handle his groundball. Chris Woodward’s sacrifice bunt sent pinch-runner Pete Orr to third and McCann to second. Escobar then stepped to the plate and smoked a double to the left-center gap, chasing both runs home to give Atlanta the lead. Cleveland made things interesting in the bottom of the inning as Josh Barfield singled with one out and moved to second on a Bob Wickman balk. Dellucci walked with two outs, but Wickman struck out Blake to notch his 12th save of the season. Wickman, who struck out three batters in the ninth, rebounded from his ninth-inning collapse on Thursday against the Twins. Sabathia (9-2) was tagged for five runs — four earned — on 12 hits through 8 1/3 innings, with seven strikeouts and a walk. Buddy Carlyle, starting in place of John Smoltz, pitched six innings, yielding three runs — two earned — on six hits for the Braves, who put the brakes on a three-game skid and won for just the third time in their last 10 games. Rafael Soriano (2-0) gave up Blake’s home run in the eighth but picked up the win. Victor Martinez went 2- for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Indians, who lost for the fourth time in their last six games. Final Score: Boston 10, San Francisco 2

Boston, MA - Dustin Pedroia went 5-for-5, including a two-run homer, and collected a career-high five RBI, as Boston rocked San Francisco, 10-2, in the opener of a three-game interleague set at Fenway Park. Julian Tavarez (4-4), the much-maligned fifth starter, allowed six hits and two runs over seven innings, fanning three and walking two. J.D. Drew finished 3-for-4, knocked in three runs and scored three times for the Red Sox, who snapped a two-game slide and lead the AL East by 8 1/2 games over the Yankees. Wily Mo Pena and Manny Ramirez also drove in a run each. Barry Zito (6-7) had a rough night on the mound, yielding five hits and seven runs — six earned — over 5 1/3 innings with five strikeouts and four walks. Dave Roberts doubled and scored a run for the Giants, who have lost two straight and five of seven. Mark Sweeney had an RBI double and scored once in the loss. Barry Bonds, in his first ever visit to Fenway, finished 1-for-3 with a single and a walk. He remains at 747 home runs, eight away from tying Hank Aaron’s all-time record. Bonds nearly homered in his first at- bat in the opening inning, but the ball tailed barely foul down the right- field line. He ended up popping out.

Final Score: Detroit 12, Philadelphia 8

Philadelphia, PA - Ivan Rodriguez went 3-for-5, homered, scored three runs and had five RBI as the Detroit Tigers outslugged the Philadelphia Phillies, 12-8, in the opener of a three-game interleague set. Sean Casey went 4-for-5 with three RBI for the Tigers, who snapped a two-game skid. Jeremy Bonderman (7-0) was shaky in his start, allowing four homers among his nine hits and five runs, but fanned five in six-plus innings. Horrible pitching doomed the Phillies on a night when they blasted five home runs, two by Jimmy Rollins, who also tripled and drove in three. Jon Lieber (3-5), coming off an 11-strikeout shutout over the Kansas City Royals in his last start, was busted up for 10 hits and seven runs — six earned — in five innings with five strikeouts, while committing the throwing error that led to his one unearned run. Reliever Francisco Rosario let in four more runs in one inning of work, ending any hopes of a comeback for the Phillies, who saw their three-game win streak come to an end.

Final Score: Arizona 7, Baltimore 3

Baltimore, MD - Orlando Hudson belted the go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning, as the Diamondbacks rallied for a 7-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles in the opener of a three-game series. Chris Snyder also homered during Arizona’s five-run eighth inning and Augie Ojeda smacked a two-run shot in the ninth, as the Diamondbacks snapped a three-game skid and won for just the second time in eight contests. Aubrey Huff had three hits and an RBI for Baltimore, which wasted a decent outing by Erik Bedard and lost for a sixth straight time. Bedard allowed six hits and two runs with nine strikeouts over seven-plus innings for the Orioles, who have dropped 11 of 13 games. Doug Slaten (3-0) threw one inning to pick up the win, while Tony Pena and Jose Valverde each threw a scoreless frame to finish the game. Micah Owings was charged with six hits and three runs over six innings for the Diamondbacks, who announced before the game that Randy Johnson will miss his scheduled start Saturday due to lower back pain. Johnson began the season on the disabled list after undergoing back surgery.

Final Score: Pittsburgh 4, Chicago White Sox 2

Pittsburgh, PA - Paul Maholm pitched seven strong innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates downed the Chicago White Sox, 4-2, in the opener of a three-game interleague series at PNC Park. Maholm (3-9) gave up just one run on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts to snap a personal five-decision losing streak for the Pirates, who have won three of their last four games. Jose Bautista and Xavier Nady each went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Jack Wilson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the win. A.J. Pierzynski went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored while Jon Garland (4-4) was handed the loss, as he gave up four runs on 11 hits in six innings for the White Sox, who have dropped four straight and nine of their last 10 games.

Final Score: Texas 7, Cincinnati 6

Cincinnati, OH - Sammy Sosa hit his 599th career home run - a grand slam in the fifth inning - and the Texas Rangers held on to beat the Cincinnati Reds, 7-6, in the start of a three-game interleague series at Great American Ballpark. Sosa, who also had a run-scoring single and finished the game with five RBI, ended a drought of 70 at-bats since his last homer, which occurred on May 22 against Minnesota. With his next home run, he will become only the fifth player in major league history to reach the 600 mark. Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth and Willie Mays are the only other players ahead of him. Ramon Vazquez also homered for Texas, which has won two straight following a three-game slide. Vicente Padilla (3-8) was struck for six runs on 12 hits over five innings, but earned his first win since May 21 and first win on the road this season for the Rangers. David Ross and Adam Dunn both homered, and Scott Hatteberg had three hits for the Reds, who have dropped three straight. Matt Belisle (5-5) yielded seven runs on nine hits, walked one and fanned five over five innings in the loss.

Final Score: Houston 5, Seattle 1

Houston, TX - Wandy Rodriguez was charged with just one run to lead the Houston Astros to a 5-1 win over the Seattle Mariners in the first of a three-game interleague set at Minute Maid Park. Rodriguez (4-6) gave up six hits and struck out seven in 7 2/3 innings of work for the Astros, who had lost four of five coming into the game. Mike Lamb went 4-for-4 with a two- run home run and three RBI, while Craig Biggio had three hits and an RBI in the win. Biggio hit his 657th double in the game, tying him with Nap Lajoie for sixth place all-time in doubles. Also, Biggio is just 12 hits away from 3,000 in his career. Felix Hernandez (3-4) was rocked for four runs on 12 hits in six innings of work, while Willie Bloomquist hit an inside-the- park home run for the Mariners, who have dropped three straight after a five-game winning streak.

Final Score: Kansas City 6, Florida 2

Kansas City, MO - Gil Meche snapped a five-start losing streak by tossing eight strong innings as the Kansas City Royals downed the Florida Marlins, 6-2, in the opener of a three-game interleague series at Kauffman Stadium. Meche (4-6), the Royals’ $55 million offseason acquisition, allowed just one run and scattered six hits to pick up his first win since May 3. Mike Sweeney hit a three-run double while Mark Teahen scored twice and added an RBI for Kansas City, which has won four out of five. Sergio Mitre (2-3) was roughed up for six runs on 12 hits over 6 1/3 innings for the Marlins, who have dropped three in a row. Miguel Olivo went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI in the loss.

Final Score: Milwaukee 11, Minnesota 3

Minneapolis, MN - Geoff Jenkins went 3-for-5 and hit a grand slam in the fourth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers pounded the Minnesota Twins, 11-3, in the opener of a three-game interleague set. Prince Fielder hit a two-run home run and scored three times for the Brewers, who have won three in a row and four of five. Bill Hall knocked in a pair of runs for Milwaukee while Johnny Estrada went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Claudio Vargas (5-1) benefited from the run support, yielding three runs — two earned — on five hits through six innings to pick up the win.Jason Kubel and Justin Morneau both homered for the Twins, who saw their four-game winning streak come to an end. Scott Baker (1-2) was tagged for six runs on seven hits through 4 2/3 innings. Ramon Ortiz took over for Baker and didn’t fare much better, giving up five runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Final Score: Colorado 12, Tampa Bay 2

Denver, CO - Matt Holliday went 3-for-5 with four RBI, as Colorado bested Tampa Bay, 12-2, in the first of a three-game interleague series at Coors Field. Rodrigo Lopez (3-0) exited after six innings, allowing two runs and eight hits with three strikeouts in the start to remain perfect in 2007. Jeremy Affeldt, Manny Corpas and Tom Martin combined to shut down the D-Rays over the final three innings. Todd Helton went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Garrett Atkins hit a two-run homer for the Rockies, who have won three in a row and five of six to move one game above .500 (34-33). Willy Taveras collected three hits, an RBI, and scored twice, and Jamey Carroll scored a pair of runs. James Shields (6-1) suffered his first loss of the season, giving up six hits and five runs over six full innings. Shawn Camp was tagged for four hits and four runs over one-third of an inning in relief. Carlos Pena knocked in a run for the Devil Rays, who have dropped three in a row. Delmon Young added his eighth homer of the season, Jonny Gomes was 3- for-4, and Ty Wigginton had two hits and scored a run.

Final Score: Oakland 14, St. Louis 3

Oakland, CA - Dan Haren threw seven strong innings to win his eighth consecutive decision, as the Athletics spoiled Tony La Russa’s return to Oakland with a 14-3 milestone victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Jason Kendall stroked a two-run double during a six-run third inning for the A’s, who recorded their 8,000th win as a franchise since it began play in 1901. Dan Johnson belted a three-run homer, Mark Kotsay drove in three runs and Eric Chavez also homered for Oakland, which won for the 11th time in 13 games. Jack Cust had three hits and scored three times. Haren (8-2), a second-round pick of the Cardinals in 2001 who joined the A’s after being traded as part of the Mark Mulder deal in 2004, allowed six hits and three runs — two earned — while walking three and fanning eight batters. He hasn’t lost since April 7 in Anaheim, his second start of the year, and continues to lead the majors with a 1.64 ERA. Haren has allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his last 12 starts, the longest such streak in Oakland history. Jim Nash held the previous mark in 1968. This was La Russa’s first game in Oakland since he joined the Cardinals in 1996. With La Russa at the helm Oakland won four division titles, three pennants and the 1989 World Series over his 10-year span with the A’s. La Russa saw his team commit a costly error and allow 14 hits in losing for the sixth time in eight games. Braden Looper (6-6) lost his third straight decision, giving up eight hits and eight runs — seven earned — over 4 1/3 innings before departing with tightness in his right shoulder.

Final Score: LA Dodgers 2, LA Angels of Anaheim 1

Los Angeles, CA - Derek Lowe outdueled Ervin Santana, as the Dodgers edged the Angels, 2-1, in the latest edition of the Freeway Series at Dodger Stadium. Lowe (7-6) allowed just one run and four hits over seven innings, while recording a career-high 11 strikeouts. His biggest test of the night came in the sixth, when he allowed a two-out single to Chone Figgins before fanning Orlando Cabrera to end the inning. It was just the 19th time this season Cabrera has gone down on strikes, with the noise from the capacity crowd more reminiscent of a playoff atmosphere than a mid-season contest. Luis Gonzalez added a two-run single, and Takashi Saito pitched out of trouble in the ninth to earn his 19th save for the Dodgers, who have won four straight and also broke a five-game losing streak to their cross-town rivals. Santana (5-7) allowed just two runs on five hits, walked a pair and struck out four in seven innings for the Angels, who had won two straight coming in. Casey Kotchman knocked in the lone run.

Final Score: Chicago 4, San Diego 1

Chicago, IL - Ted Lilly hurled eight brilliant innings as Chicago downed San Diego, 4-1, in the opener of a three-game set at Wrigley Field. Lilly (5-4) rebounded from his shortest stint of the year to match his longest. The veteran lefty, who was ejected after just two-thirds of an inning for throwing at Edgar Renteria of the Atlanta Braves in his last outing, allowed only one run on six hits to pick up the win. Ryan Dempster tossed a perfect ninth to earn his 15th save of the year. Mike Fontenot hit a two-run home run and drove in three runs for the Cubs, who won their third straight contest. Alfonso Soriano added a solo shot for Chicago while Derrek Lee finished 4-for-4 to raise his batting average to .342 on the season. Adrian Gonzalez had an RBI triple to account for the only offense for the Padres, who have lost five of seven games. David Wells (3-4) surrendered four runs on 10 hits in six innings of work en route to the loss.
