Pizza Play Padres vs DRays - 07:10 est

The slumping NL West leaders try to halt their longest losing streak of the season Wednesday night when they continue their three-game series with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Less than a week ago, the Padres (36-27) were playing their best ball of 2007, completing a season-high five-game winning streak Thursday when they wrapped up a three-game sweep of the division rival Los Angeles Dodgers. However, they have followed that up with their first four-game skid of the year - all against AL opponents.

After a three-game sweep at home by Seattle over the weekend, San Diego fell 11-4 to the Devil Rays (29-33) in Tuesday night’s series opener.

The Padres are just 2-5 in interleague play this season, although they remain ahead of Arizona by percentage points in the NL West after the Diamondbacks fell 4-1 to the New York Yankees on Tuesday.

In an effort to avoid dropping five in a row for the first time since April 24-29, 2006, the Padres will send ace Jake Peavy (7-1, 1.97 ERA) to the mound. The right-hander was on the mound for San Diego’s last victory, but did not receive a decision Thursday as the Padres used a five-run rally in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Dodgers 6-5.

Peavy gave up four runs, seven hits and three walks in 6 2-3 innings - his second straight outing allowing three runs or more after doing so only twice in his first 11 starts. The relative rough stretch has dropped Peavy into second place behind Oakland’s Dan Haren (1.58) for the major league ERA lead.

Peavy, 3-0 with a 1.06 ERA in five road starts this season, has never faced the Devil Rays.

Tampa Bay rallied from behind three times Tuesday night before Carlos Pena’s grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning put the game out of reach. The Devil Rays lead the majors with 20 comeback wins - comprising nearly 70 percent of their overall victory total.

The win was the third in a row for the Rays, who are looking to match their season-best four-game run from May 13-17. Tampa Bay has totaled 27 runs during the current streak, and is averaging 8.1 runs while batting .320 over the last seven contests.

Edwin Jackson (0-7, 7.39) looks for some help from the offense as he tries again for his first win of 2007. While the right-hander has pitched poorly, his 3.44 run support average is also the lowest among starters for the Devil Rays.

Jackson produced only his third quality start of the season Thursday at Toronto, when he gave up three runs and four hits over six innings of Tampa Bay’s 5-3 victory.

He is 0-0 with a 4.00 ERA in three career appearances, including one start, versus the Padres - all while pitching for the Dodgers from 2003-05.

Wednesday, June 13th (All times eastern)

CHICAGO WHITE SOX (27-34) AT PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (34-31), 1:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago - John Danks (3-6, 4.38) Philadelphia - Kyle Kendrick (0-0, 0.00)

With veteran Freddy Garcia currently on the disabled list with an injured right shoulder, the Philadelphia Phillies will send Kyle Kendrick to the mound today in the finale of a three-game interleague series against the Chicago White Sox at Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies purchased the contract of Kendrick, who was with their Double-A club in Reading, PA. The 23-year-old right-hander, who was picked in the seventh round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, posted a 4-7 record with a 3.21 earned run average in 12 starts (81 innings) for Reading.

Kendrick, a Houston native, was selected to make his major league debut over Triple-A hurlers Zack Segovia and J.D. Durbin.

Garcia, meanwhile, underwent an MRI which revealed damage to the labrum and fraying of his right rotator cuff. Garcia, who is 1-5 with a 5.90 ERA this season, is expected to seek another opinion and could possibly undergo surgery.

Philadelphia will aim for a sweep of the White Sox after winning Monday’s opener by a 3-0 score before recording a 7-3 triumph in last night’s second test of this series. Chase Utley led the way Tuesday night with a two-run homer and four RBI, while starter Cole Hamels settled down after a shaky first inning to record the win.

Hamels was charged with just two runs on six hits with a walk and eight strikeouts in eight innings of work to earn his third win in his last four starts. He now leads the National League in wins (9), one ahead of Los Angeles Dodgers hurler and former Phillie Randy Wolf.

Greg Dobbs drove in two runs and Pat Burrell had an RBI for the Phillies, who have won three of four and six of their last eight games. With the win and losses by Atlanta and the Mets on Tuesday, the Phillies continued to ascend in the NL East. They are now one game behind the Braves and trail division- leading New York by three games.

Rookie pitcher John Danks will try to right the ship for Chicago today and is 3-6 with a 4.38 earned run average in 11 starts this season.

Danks is 0-2 in his last three starts following a personal three-game winning streak. In his last outing on June 8 against Houston, Danks absorbed the loss after giving up four runs — three earned — in 5 2/3 innings of a 5-2 setback at U.S. Cellular Field.

The left-hander, who is 1-3 in six road starts this season, will make his first-ever appearance against the Phillies.

Chicago has dropped seven of eight and 14 of its last 17 games, and remains nine games off the pace in the American League Central standings. In last night’s 7-3 setback in South Philly, Paul Konerko, Jermaine Dye and Luis Terrero each hit solo home runs for the White Sox.

Jose Contreras took the mound and was saddled with the loss after he gave up seven runs — five earned — on seven hits in just 3 1/3 innings.

The White Sox and Phillies are meeting for the first time since Chicago won two of three games at home during the 2004 season.

Chicago is 102-81 all-time in interleague play, while the Phillies own an 83-94 mark against the American League.

TORONTO BLUE JAYS (30-34) AT SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (30-34), 3:35 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Toronto - Dustin McGowan (2-2, 5.02) San Francisco - Tim Lincecum (2-0, 4.26)

Phenom Tim Lincecum tries to remain undefeated this afternoon, as the San Francisco Giants try and complete a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays at AT&T Park.

Lincecum, the 10th overall pick in the 2006 draft, is 2-0 with a 4.26 earned run average in his seven starts this season, but is winless in his last three outings. Against the Oakland Athletics on Friday the 22-year-old right-hander allowed three runs and four hits in 4 1/3 innings, and did not factor in the decision of his team’s 5-3 win.

Toronto will counter with a young gun of its own in 25-year-old righty Dustin McGowan, who is 2-2 this season with a 5.02 ERA. McGowan did not get a decision in his last start on Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, as he gave up two runs and four hits in seven frames of his team’s 4-3 loss.

Both pitchers will be facing their opponents for the first time today.

In the second game of this series on Tuesday, Ryan Klesko drove in two runs and Randy Winn made a great catch to save a potential game-tying home run in the ninth inning, as San Francisco Giants edged Toronto, 3-2.

Dave Roberts posted two hits and scored twice for the Giants, who have won two straight on the heels of a three-game sweep at the hands of cross-town rival Oakland over the weekend.

Noah Lowry allowed two runs on four hits over six solid innings and earned the win. Lowry (6-5) struck out five and walked four.

Toronto starting pitcher A.J. Burnett (5-6) surrendered three runs — two earned — on six hits, but left the game with two outs in the fifth inning due to a right shoulder strain.

Alex Rios belted a two-run homer for the Blue Jays, who have lost five of their last seven games overall.

San Francisco has won seven of eight from the Blue Jays and swept them in a three-game set at home the last time the teams faced off back in 2004.

WASHINGTON NATIONALS (27-37) AT BALTIMORE ORIOLES (29-35), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Washington - Matt Chico (3-4, 4.86) Baltimore - Steve Trachsel (5-4, 3.82)

Veteran Steve Trachsel looks for his 12th career win against Washington tonight when the Baltimore Orioles host the Nationals for game two of the three-game Battle of the Beltway series at Camden Yards.

Trachsel, who was drafted by the Chicago Cubs back in 1991, is 11-6 in 28 career starts against the Nationals and their predecessors in Montreal, tossing one complete game with a 3.40 earned run average.

He’s won four of his last five starts in 2007, including a 4-2 defeat of Colorado on June 8, in which he surrendered seven hits and two runs in six innings.

He downed the Nationals, 5-4, on May 18 at RFK Stadium, allowing four hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Lefty Matt Chico looks for a first road win in his seventh road start for the Nationals.

In six tries away from home, Chico is 0-4 with a 5.46 ERA. He allowed three hits and no runs in four innings against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium on May 27, getting a no-decision.

Since, in two home starts, he’s allowed 11 hits and five runs over 12 1/3 innings while getting no-decisions against San Diego and Pittsburgh.

Chico has never faced the Orioles.

On Tuesday, Ryan Zimmerman and Brian Schneider each hit two-run home runs as the Nationals beat the Orioles, 7-4. Ryan Church hit a solo homer and Felipe Lopez knocked in two runs for the Nationals, who have won three of four.

Micah Bowie (3-2) picked up the win after yielding three runs on three hits through six innings.

Miguel Tejada’s leadoff homer in the ninth off Jesus Colome brought Baltimore within three runs. However, with the tying run at the plate, Chad Cordero induced Paul Bako into a game-ending double play for his ninth save of the season and the 100th of his career.

Melvin Mora hit a three-run home run for the Orioles, who have dropped three in a row and eight of 10. Daniel Cabrera (5-7) was tagged for seven runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The Nationals and Orioles met in May for three games in Washington with Baltimore winning two of three. The clubs split six games last year as well.

COLORADO ROCKIES (31-33) AT BOSTON RED SOX (41-22), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Colorado - Josh Fogg (1-5, 5.06) Boston - Curt Schilling (6-2, 3.49)

Coming off one of the best performances in his career, Curt Schilling will lead the Boston Red Sox against the Colorado Rockies tonight in the second test of a three-game interleague series from Fenway Park.

In his previous start last Wednesday at Oakland, Schilling flirted with a no- hitter until Athletics outfielder Shannon Stewart stroked a base hit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Schilling then retired the next batter to preserve the 1-0 win, while recording his 83rd complete game, third one- hitter and 20th shutout of his career.

Schilling, who shook off a pitch from catcher Jason Varitek before Stewart singled to right field, also posted a one-hitter against the New York Mets in 1992 and later versus the Milwaukee Brewers in 2002.

The veteran right-hander, who is 2-0 in seven home starts this season, is 6-2 with a 3.49 earned run average in 13 starts and is 2-0 over the past three trips to the mound with a 2.14 ERA. In 25 career games (24 starts) against Colorado, Schilling is 11-5 with four complete games, including a shutout, and a 4.31 earned run average.

Boston, which leads the American League East division by 9 1/2 games over the rival New York Yankees, posted a 2-1 win over Colorado in Tuesday’s series opener. J.D. Drew lifted a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to give Boston its fourth win in five tries after a four-game losing streak.

Starting pitcher Tim Wakefield earned the win and allowed one run and four hits over eight innings with three strikeouts and a walk. Jonathan Papelbon tossed a scoreless ninth for his 15th save of the season.

Kevin Youkilis chipped in an RBI single, while David Ortiz recorded three hits and Julio Lugo and Alex Cora both scored a run for the Red Sox.

The Rockies will send Josh Fogg to the bump in Wednesday’s contest. Fogg is just 1-5 with a 5.06 ERA in 11 games (10 starts) this season.

The righty is 0-4 over his past six starts since his only win on April 25 against the New York Mets. He last toed the rubber on June 7 against Houston and did not factor in the decision, allowing six runs and 11 hits through five innings of a 7-6 victory for Colorado.

Fogg faced the Red Sox once in his career as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates and did not factor in the outcome of a 6-5 setback on June 17, 2005. He was reached for five runs and eight hits over seven innings of work.

In Tuesday’s 2-1 setback in Beantown, Yorvit Torrealba collected two hits and knocked in the lone run for the Rockies, who lost for the second time in their last six games. Brad Hawpe doubled and scored a run in defeat. Starter Aaron Cook was the tough-luck loser for Colorado despite scattering seven hits and two runs over 7 1/3 innings with four K’s and two walks.

Boston and Colorado are meeting for the first time since the Rockies won two of three matchups at Coors Field during the 2004 season. The Red Sox are 98-84 in interleague play, while Colorado is 69-83 against the American League.

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (37-32) AT NEW YORK YANKEES (31-31), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Arizona - Livan Hernandez (5-3, 3.66) New York - Mike Mussina (2-3, 5.63)

The New York Yankees try to extend their season-high winning streak to eight games this evening, when they continue a three-game interleague set against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Yankee Stadium.

In the series opener on Tuesday, Bobby Abreu’s hot bat belted a three-run homer and Chien-Ming Wang tossed seven stellar innings to help New York get back to .500 with a 4-1 win.

Abreu is 20-for-41 (.488) during an 11-game hitting streak and has seen his average rise from .228 to .273. The right fielder has 10 walks, 12 RBI, eight extra-base hits and 15 runs scored over those last 11 games.

Wang (6-4) allowed one run on six hits with two strikeouts.

The Yankees were last above .500 back on April 19, when they were 8-7. New York hasn’t won eight straight since a 10-game run from May 7-17, 2005.

Chad Tracy’s solo home run accounted for the only offense for Arizona, which has dropped four of its last five games overall.

Reigning NL Cy Young winner Brandon Webb (6-4) took the mound in front of the New York faithful and yielded four runs — three earned — on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks over seven innings.

Hoping to keep New York on the right track tonight will be right-hander Mike Mussina, who has not won since May 9. Mussina, who is 2-3 with a 5.63 earned run average, picked up a no decision in his last start on Thursday against the Chicago White Sox, despite a superb outing. He allowed a run on four hits in six innings, but did not factor in the decision of his team’s 10-3 win.

Mussina lost his only regular season start to the Diamondbacks, giving up six runs and 10 hits in five innings during the 2002. He faced Arizona twice during the 2001 World Series and went 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA in that year’s Fall Classic.

Arizona will counter with Livan Hernandez, who is 5-3 with a 3.66 ERA. Hernandez did not get a decision in his last start on Thursday against San Francisco, as he allowed three runs and five hits in seven innings of his team’s 5-4 loss.

Hernandez has faced the Yankees three times in his career and is 0-2 with a 4.12 ERA against them.

Arizona topped the Yankees in seven games in the thrilling 2001 World Series. New York, though, has exacted a measure of revenge, winning five of the seven regular season matchups since, including three of the last four in the Bronx.

CLEVELAND INDIANS (37-26) AT FLORIDA MARLINS (32-33), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Cleveland - Cliff Lee (2-4, 6.31) Florida - Byung-Hyun Kim (3-2, 5.74)

A three-game losing streak is the reason why the Cleveland Indians have lost ground in the American League Central and they will attempt to get back in the win column this evening in the second installment of a three-game interleague series against the Florida Marlins at Dolphin Stadium.

The Indians suffered their third straight loss in Tuesday’s series-opening 3-0 setback in South Beach, allowing the surging Detroit Tigers to pull even with the Tribe atop the AL Central division. Casey Blake extended his career-best hitting streak to a current major league-best 21 games, ending 1-for-4 for the Indians, who have dropped seven of their last 10 games.

Cleveland starting pitcher Fausto Carmona was nearly perfect until running into trouble in the seventh before eventually suffering his first setback since April 13 — a span of 11 starts. The right-hander was charged with three runs on five hits and struck out a career-high tying six in seven innings.

Struggling left-hander Cliff Lee will try to ease Cleveland’s pain this evening and the veteran is 2-4 with a 6.31 ERA in eight starts this season.

Lee is mired in a personal four-game losing streak and owns a 9.15 earned run average over that span. Lee last took the mound on June 8 against Cincinnati and was saddled with his fourth straight loss, yielding four runs in six frames of a 4-3 setback at Great American Ball Park.

The Arkansas product, who is 1-3 in five road starts this season, faced Florida just once in his career on June 8 of the 2004 season. Lee did not factor in the outcome of the 7-5 loss and permitted three runs, two of which were earned, through six innings of work at Jacobs Field.

Miguel Olivo’s three-run double in the seventh inning lifted the Marlins in last night’s series opener and starter Scott Olsen tossed seven innings of three-hit ball for the win. Armando Benitez and Kevin Gregg preserved the shutout with a combined two scoreless innings of relief.

Florida ended a two-game slide with the victory and won for the fourth time in six outings. The Marlins are now five games behind the NL East division- leading New York Mets.

Byung-Hyun Kim takes the mound this evening for the Marlins and will make his sixth start for his new club. Acquired in May from the Colorado Rockies, Kim is 2-0 with a 4.62 ERA in five outings with the Marlins. Overall, he is 3-2 with a 5.74 earned run average with Colorado and Florida.

Kim has recorded back-to-back no decisions, including a June 8 performance against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Kim was rocked for seven runs — six earned — in just 2 2/3 innings of work, but was bailed out by the offense in a 14-8 victory over Tampa Bay.

The South Korean right-hander is 0-1 with a 6.97 ERA in six career games (2 starts) against Cleveland.

Cleveland and Florida are meeting for the first time since the Marlins took two of three game against the Tribe at Jacobs Field in 2004. Florida, which is 101-74 in interleague play, also won three straight against the Indians at home in 2002. Cleveland is 96-86 all-time against the Senior Circuit.

In 1997, the Marlins won their first of two World Series titles by defeating the Indians in seven games.

MILWAUKEE BREWERS (34-30) AT DETROIT TIGERS (37-26), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Milwaukee - Chris Capuano (5-5, 4.35) Detroit - Mike Maroth (4-2, 5.29)

Detroit’s Mike Maroth will have a tough act to follow when he takes the mound for the Tigers tonight in the second of a three-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers at Comerica Park.

Maroth is handed the task of following Justin Verlander, who threw the club’s first no-hitter in 23 years in Tuesday’s series-opening 4-0 win. Verlander struck out a career-high 12 batters for Detroit’s first no-hitter since Jack Morris accomplished the feat on April 7, 1984 against the White Sox in Chicago.

The victory was Detroit’s third in a row and fifth in its last six games. More importantly, the win moved the Tigers into a tie with Cleveland for first place in the American League Central. The Indians have lost three straight.

Verlander (7-2) wasn’t perfect, as he walked four batters — with three of them coming to Bill Hall — and the 24-year-old right-hander also got the benefit of two great fielding plays from Magglio Ordonez and Neifi Perez.

It was the sixth no-hitter in team annals and the first for the Tigers in Detroit since Virgil Trucks shut down the Washington Senators at Briggs Stadium on May 15, 1952.

Verlander pitched the second no-hitter in the majors this season. He joined Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox, who no-hit Texas on April 18 at U.S. Cellular Field. Boston’s Curt Schilling came within one out of a no-hitter last week at Oakland.

Brandon Inge homered and drove in two runs for the Tigers. Curtis Granderson tripled in a run and Placido Polanco added a sacrifice fly.

Milwaukee starter Jeff Suppan (7-7) was charged with seven hits and four runs over 6 1/3 innings as the Brewers lost for the fourth time in five contests. This was the first no-hitter against Milwaukee since Minnesota’s Scott Erickson did it on April 27, 1994.

The Brewers, who fell to 1-3 on a nine-game interleague road trip, still lead the NL Central by 5 1/2 games over the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals.

So now it’s Maroth’s turn. He will make his first career start against the Brewers tonight and is coming off a win last time out that ran his mark to 4-2 with a 5.29 earned run average on the season.

Maroth bested Texas on Thursday after yielding three runs on eight hits over five innings of an 11-4 victory.

The left-hander is 0-2 with a 5.60 ERA in four home starts this season, however.

Chris Capuano will attempt to halt a career-high five-game personal losing streak when he starts for Milwaukee tonight. The left-hander’s skid has stretched over his last six starts, and he is pitching to a 6.89 ERA over that span.

Capuano last started on Friday versus Texas, when he was tagged for six runs on eight hits and four walks over four innings to fall to 5-5 with a 4.35 ERA on the season.

The lefty has made just one start in his career against Detroit, with that outing coming on June 21 of last year. He earned the win after pitching seven innings of three-run ball.

Detroit and Milwaukee met for the first time since 2001 last year, with the Tigers winning two of three at Miller Park. The Brewers are 66-80 all-time in interleague play, while the Tigers are 92-90.

TEXAS RANGERS (23-41) AT PITTSBURGH PIRATES (27-37), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Texas - Robinson Tejeda (5-6, 6.47) Pittsburgh - Ian Snell (5-4, 2.91)

The Pittsburgh Pirates will try to keep swinging for the fences when they continue their three-game series with the Texas Rangers tonight at PNC Park.

Jose Bautista, Xavier Nady and Adam LaRoche all homered in the Pirates’ 7-5 series-opening win on Tuesday.

Zach Duke (3-6) went six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out three to earn the win. Matt Capps recorded the final three outs for his third save in as many chances for the Pirates, who were swept by the Yankees over the weekend.

The victory was the first for the Pirates in seven all-time games against the Rangers. Texas swept a three-game set at home in 2004 after taking all three games of a series in Pittsburgh in 2002.

Ian Snell will toe the rubber for the Pirates tonight and is coming off his second straight solid outing. After besting the Dodgers behind eight innings of one-run ball on June 2, Snell returned to the hill Thursday versus Washington and received a no decision after allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over seven frames.

The right-hander has never faced Texas in his young career.

The Rangers will send Robinson Tejeda to the hill tonight and the right-hander halted a career-high three-game losing streak last time out.

On Friday against the Brewers, Tejeda earned the win despite giving up six runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings of a 9-6 victory. He also walked three and struck out seven.

The righty has made just one career start against the Pirates. That outing came on August 18, 2005 while with Philadelphia, and Tejeda was hit with a loss after allowing six runs on eight hits over just 3 2/3 frames.

Sammy Sosa drove in two runs and Marlon Byrd scored twice last night for the Rangers, who have lost four of six to push their record to an MLB-worst 23-41.

Kevin Millwood (2-6) was tagged for six runs — five earned — on eight hits, while walking two and striking out one in just 4 1/3 frames for Texas.

The Rangers are 86-97 all-time in interleague play while the Pirates are 53-87.

SAN DIEGO PADRES (36-27) AT TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS (29-33), 7:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Diego - Jake Peavy (7-1, 1.97) Tampa Bay - Edwin Jackson (0-7, 7.39)

Newly-minted 26-year-old right-hander Jake Peavy looks for his fifth straight victory tonight when the San Diego Padres visit Tropicana Field for game two of a three-game interleague series with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Peavy, who celebrated a birthday on May 31, is 4-0 in seven starts since dropping a 3-2 decision to Washington on April 30. He’s pitched at least six innings in each outing since the loss, giving up two runs or less in five of the seven.

In his last start, on June 7 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, he allowed seven hits and four runs while getting a no-decision in San Diego’s 6-5 victory. The outing, his worst since mid-April, raised Peavy’s earned run average from 1.68 to 1.97.

The Mobile, Alabama native is 3-0 in five road starts with a 1.06 ERA.

Tampa Bay goes with hapless right-hander Edwin Jackson, who’s without a win since 2005 when he pitched for the Dodgers. The former sixth-round draft choice (2001) was 2-2 with the Dodgers in 2005, then got no-decisions in 23 appearances with the Devil Rays last year.

He’s dropped all seven decisions this season, but got a no-decision in a June 7 start at Toronto, when he allowed four hits and three runs in six innings of a 5-3 Devil Rays win.

On Tuesday, Carlos Pena hit a grand slam and finished with five RBI as Tampa Bay rallied late to crush San Diego, 11-4. Delmon Young knocked in two runs and Greg Norton went 2-for-4 and scored three times for the Devil Rays, who trailed 4-3 after the sixth before scoring eight runs in the seventh and eighth innings to win their third straight.

Scott Kazmir tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts through six innings of work, yielding four runs on nine hits with two walks.

Casey Fossum (4-6) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief.

Kevin Kouzmanoff went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Padres, who have lost four in a row. Greg Maddux pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up four runs — three earned — on six hits. Cla Meredith (2-5) yielded two unearned runs in the seventh and was saddled with the loss.

The Padres and Devil Rays last met in 2004, when Tampa Bay swept a three-game set in San Diego. The Padres, though, took two out of three in Tampa in 2002.

San Diego is 76-92 all-time in interleague play while Tampa Bay is 70-97.

LA ANGELS OF ANAHEIM (40-25) AT CINCINNATI REDS (26-39), 7:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: LA Angels - John Lackey (9-4, 2.60) Cincinnati - Kyle Lohse (3-7, 4.22)

Right-handed Texan John Lackey looks to get back on track following the end of a five-game win streak when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim visit Great American Ballpark for the second of three games with the host Cincinnati Reds.

Lackey, a 28-year-old native of Abilene, had won five straight starts between May 11 and June 1 before dropping an 8-5 verdict to Minnesota on June 6, while allowing seven hits and four earned runs in seven innings.

A 14- and 13-game winner in the last two seasons, respectively, Lackey has never faced the Reds. He is 5-2 in seven road starts this season, allowing 13 earned runs in 46 1/3 innings.

Cincinnati goes with right-hander Kyle Lohse, who pitched an 8 1/3-inning gem in defeating St. Louis, 5-1, on June 7.

In the win, his second in three starts following a six-start losing streak, he gave up seven hits and a run. Overall, in his last three outings, Lohse has given up 18 hits and four runs in 23 1/3 innings.

The Chico, California native is 4-3 in nine career starts against the Angels, with a 6.35 earned run average.

On Tuesday, Ken Griffey Jr. knocked in the go-ahead run as the Reds beat the Angels, 5-3. Josh Hamilton went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Reds, who have won four of their last five games following a four-game slide.

Jon Coutlangus (3-1) pitched a perfect inning in relief of Bronson Arroyo, who allowed three runs on nine hits, walked three and struck out five in the six innings of work. David Weathers got the last four outs for his 13th save in 15 chances.

Casey Kotchman and Gary Matthews Jr. hit solo homers for the Angels, who lost for just the third time in their last 10 games and wasted a dominant performance by Kelvim Escobar.

Escobar struck out a career-high 14 over six innings. He allowed three runs on five hits, walked one and departed after his pitch count reached 116. Dustin Moseley (4-1) allowed a run on two hits while recording just one out for the loss.

The Angels and the Reds last met in 2002, with LA winning two of three at home.

OAKLAND ATHLETICS (34-29) AT HOUSTON ASTROS (27-37), 8:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Oakland - Joe Blanton (5-4, 3.60) Houston - Chris Sampson (6-5, 3.36)

After playing an 11-inning thriller on Tuesday, the Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics resume their three-game interleague series this evening at Minute Maid Park.

Houston overcame another blown save from its troublesome bullpen to take last night’s opener, with Brad Ausmus singling home Adam Everett with the game- winning run in the 11th to lift the Astros to a 5-4 win.

Everett doubled off Ron Flores (0-1) with one out and Ausmus followed with a base hit to left field. Jason Kendall’s throw to the plate was off line and Everett scored easily.

Ausmus went 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI, and Craig Biggio also collected three hits in five at-bats for Houston.

The Astros took a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning, but Oakland’s Mark Kotsay tied the contest with a leadoff home run off Brad Lidge.

Lidge was in a save situation for the first time since being removed as Houston’s closer in April after failing to convert a pair of early-season opportunities. He was placed back in his former role because of Dan Wheeler’s recent struggles.

Astros starter Roy Oswalt struck out a season-high 10 batters over the first six innings and allowed three runs on six hits.

Kotsay finished 4-for-5 for the Athletics, who lost for only the second time in 10 games.

Oakland will try pull even tonight behind Joe Blanton, who has put together back-to-back outstanding efforts over his last two starts.

After tossing a brilliant three-hit shutout to defeat Minnesota on June 2, Blanton limited Boston to one run and four hits over 7 1/3 innings on Thursday. However, the right-hander was outdueled by Curt Schilling and wound up on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision.

Blanton will be facing Houston for the first time in his career. He is 3-2 with a 5.44 earned run average in seven road starts this season, but has lost each of his last two outings away from home.

The Astros counter with Chris Sampson, who will be attempting to extend an impressive string of quality starts tonight.

Sampson has notched victories his last two times out, including Friday’s 5-2 road win over the White Sox in which he permitted just two runs over 6 2/3 innings.

The 29-year-old has now gone at least six innings and given up three runs or less in each of his last six starts.

Sampson, who has also never previously faced the Athletics, brings a 3-1 record with a strong 2.37 ERA over five home appearances (four starts) into tonight’s matchup.

Houston will again be without the services of Lance Berkman this evening. The star first baseman began serving a two-game suspension on Tuesday for returning to the field after being ejected in a June 5 game at Colorado.

These clubs have only faced one another one time previously, with the A’s sweeping a three-game set from Houston in Oakland in June, 2002.

The A’s are 5-2 against the National League so far this season and own one of the best all-time marks in interleague competition at 108-74. The Astros are 82-74 overall versus the AL, including a 4-3 mark this year.

SEATTLE MARINERS (35-26) AT CHICAGO CUBS (28-35), 8:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Seattle - Miguel Batista (7-4, 5.48) Chicago - Sean Marshall (2-2, 2.08)

Baseball’s hottest team takes aim at a sixth consecutive victory tonight at Wrigley Field, where the Seattle Mariners will try to defeat the Chicago Cubs for a second straight night.

The Mariners needed additional time to record their ninth win in 10 games on Tuesday, but the club came through with a 5-3 triumph in 13 innings in the opener of this three-game series.

Willie Bloomquist knocked in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the top of the 13th and Jamie Burke added an RBI base hit later in the frame.

J.J. Putz then got out of a jam in the bottom of the 13th for his 19th consecutive save this season. He pitched around a bases-loaded jam by retiring pinch-hitter Koyie Hill on a game-ending ground out to secure the win for Eric O’Flaherty (3-0), who tossed 2 2/3 innings of one-hit ball.

Will Ohman (0-4) took the loss after yielding two runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Jose Guillen homered for Seattle, which has now won nine straight interleague road contests and has climbed within three games of the first-place Angels in the AL West standings. Kenji Johjima went 3-for-6 with two runs scored to extend his hit streak to 10 games.

The Mariners have also won nine of their last 11 overall on the road and are an impressive 18-13 away from home so far this season.

Derrek Lee had two hits and an RBI and Mark DeRosa had three hits for Chicago, which lost for the third time in four chances.

The Cubs turn to young lefty Sean Marshall in hopes of evening this series tonight. The 24-year-old has won two straight starts, with both victories coming at the expense of Atlanta.

Marshall held the Braves to a run and struck out eight over 6 2/3 innings at Wrigley Field on June 3, then allowed just one run and four hits in six innings of work to defeat Atlanta at Turner Field on Friday.

Since being recalled from Triple-A Iowa in late May, Marshall has yielded just six earned runs in 26 innings and held opposing hitters to a .208 average. This will be his first career start against Seattle.

The Mariners will send out veteran Miguel Batista, who has ripped off four consecutive winning decisions since a May 18 setback to San Diego. The 36- year-old’s latest victory came in relief, as he threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning in Seattle’s 4-3 decision over the Padres on Sunday.

Batista’s last start came earlier in the San Diego series and wasn’t as successful. In Friday’s encounter with the Padres at Petco Park, he was touched for five runs in a 6 2/3-inning no decision.

The right-hander, who pitched for the Cubs in 1997, owns a 2-2 record with a 6.27 ERA and two saves in 17 appearances (five starts) against his one-time club. He defeated Chicago with seven innings of one-run ball as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks last season.

The Cubs and Mariners met at Safeco Field during the 2002 campaign, with Chicago taking two of the three encounters. Seattle is a strong 103-80 all- time against the National League, while the Cubs are 72-77 overall when facing the junior circuit.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (27-34) AT KANSAS CITY ROYALS (25-40), 8:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: St. Louis - Adam Wainwright (4-5, 5.19) Kansas City - Odalis Perez (3-6, 5.68)

The Kansas City Royals may own the second worst record in the majors, but they’ve been quite good when facing National League teams so far this season. Tonight the club shoots for a second consecutive victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the middle test of the I-70 Series from Kauffman Stadium.

Kansas City took Tuesday’s opener behind an outstanding start from Brian Bannister. The second-year right-hander tossed seven shutout innings to lead the Royals to an 8-1 victory.

Bannister (3-3) scattered seven hits and two walks while striking out seven to win his third straight start. He received plenty of offensive support from his teammates, who banged out 13 hits and erupted for five runs in the first inning.

Esteban German went 3-for-5 with three RBI for the Royals, while Mark Teahan also collected three hits while driving in two runs. Alex Gordon finished 3- for-4 with an RBI and Jason LaRue contributed a two-run double to the rout.

Cardinals starter Brad Thompson (4-2) was rocked for eight runs and 10 hits over 4 1/3 innings. St. Louis’ lone run came on a pinch-hit solo homer from Ryan Ludwick in the ninth.

Juan Encarnacion extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an eighth-inning single for the Cardinals, who have lost four of their last five.

The Royals just took two of three interleague games with Philadelphia over the weekend and are 5-2 thus far against the NL this season. Conversely, the Cardinals have dropped six of their seven interleague matchups in 2007.

The Cardinals also struggled against the AL during the 2006 regular season, recording a 5-10 overall mark in interleague games last year. The club did take four of six meetings from the Royals, however, and swept a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium.

St. Louis has still taken 11 of the last 15 encounters between the teams and has gone 10-2 in Kansas City over that span.

Adam Wainwright will get his first taste of this in-state rivalry in a starting role with he takes the mound for St. Louis tonight. The 25-year-old made three relief appearances against the Royals last season and posted one save and a 3.86 earned run average over 4 2/3 innings of work.

Wainwright has had an up-and-down campaign as a starter in 2007, as his 4-5 record and 5.19 ERA will attest. He struggled against Cincinnati his most recent time out, surrendering four runs and eight hits — including three homers — over six innings in a 5-1 loss on Friday.

The former first-round draft choice had allowed two runs or less in each of his last three outings prior to Friday’s loss.

Kansas City will be sending out an inconsistent pitcher of its own in Odalis Perez, who brings a 3-6 record and 5.68 ERA into tonight’s tilt. The left- hander is coming off a loss at Cleveland on Thursday in which he gave up three runs and seven hits over 5 1/3 frames.

Perez has lost four of his last five decisions and has amassed a 7.31 ERA over his three most recent starts.

The 30-year-old also does not have good career numbers against St. Louis. In nine lifetime games (six starts) versus the Cardinals, Perez is just 2-3 with an ugly 8.57 ERA.

ATLANTA BRAVES (35-30) AT MINNESOTA TWINS (31-31), 8:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Atlanta - Chuck James (5-5, 3.66) Minnesota - Carlos Silva (3-7, 4.58)

Carlos Silva hopes to bounce back from an abysmal start in his last trip to the hill when the Minnesota Twins continue their three-game series with the Atlanta Braves at the Metrodome.

Silva was battered by the Washington Nationals on Friday, as he surrendered seven runs and nine hits in three innings to drop him to 3-7 on the season, while raising his earned run average to 4.58.

The 28-year-old right-hander has been atrocious since the beginning of May for the Twins, going 1-6 with a 5.62 ERA in seven starts.

Silva has faced the Braves 16 times in his career and is 1-0 against them with a 2.88 ERA, but tonight will be his first-ever start against the team.

Atlanta will counter with left-hander Chuck James, who is 5-5 with a 3.66 ERA. James was tagged with the loss in his last start on Thursday against the Chicago Cubs, as he allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings.

James, who will be pitching against the Twins for the first time in his young career, has given up three runs or less in his last eight starts, but is just 2-3 in that span.

In the opener of this set on Tuesday Luis Castillo went 3-for-5 with two RBI as Minnesota rocked Atlanta, 7-3. Joe Mauer was 2-for-5 with a run knocked in and one scored for the Twins, who have won two in a row.

Torii Hunter knocked in two and scored once, Justin Morneau picked up an RBI and a run scored, while Nick Punto and Jason Bartlett collected two hits and scored a run apiece.

Kevin Slowey (2-0) allowed seven hits and three runs — two earned — over six full innings to remain perfect on the season.

Kyle Davies (3-5) gave up six hits and five runs in 3 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking a pair. Oscar Villarreal and Blaine Boyer also yielded runs in relief.

Jeff Francoeur finished 2-for-4 with a home run for the Braves, whose modest two-game win streak was halted, but fell for the seventh time in their last 10 games.

Of course these teams met in the thrilling 1991 World Series, which was won by Minnesota in seven games. The Braves, though, took two of three from them in the only other regular season meeting between the teams back in 2002.

NEW YORK METS (36-27) AT LOS ANGELES DODGERS (37-28), 10:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: New York - Jorge Sosa (6-1, 2.64) Los Angeles - Brad Penny (7-1, 2.26)

The Dodgers will try to sweep the New York Mets in Los Angeles for the first time in over 10 years tonight, when the two clubs wrap their three-game series at Dodger Stadium.

The last time Los Angeles swept New York at home was a three-game set from August 23-25, 1996. The Dodgers swept the Mets at Shea Stadium in 2002.

After taking this series opener on Monday, the Dodgers used three consecutive home runs in the second inning en route to a 4-1 victory last night. Wilson Betemit, Matt Kemp, and pitcher Hong-Chih Kuo all went deep on three straight pitches.

Kuo (1-1) also allowed a run on five hits over seven innings on the mound. Kemp finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored as the Dodgers moved to within just a couple percentage points of first-place San Diego in the National League West standings.

The win improved the Dodgers to 3-2 on a nine-game homestand that will next see the LA Angels of Anaheim come to town.

John Maine (6-4) allowed seven hits, four runs, walked two and fanned two in 5 1/3 innings for New York, which has dropped four straight games and eight of its last nine. Their lead in the NL East has slimmed to just two games over second-place Atlanta and three over third-place Philadelphia.

Carlos Delgado knocked in the lone New York run while David Wright went 2- for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 14 games for the Mets, who managed just five hits in the contest and are just 1-4 on their current nine-game road trip. The club next has to travel to the Bronx for a three-game set against the red-hot Yankees.

Brad Penny will start for the Dodgers and has had little success against the Mets in his career. The right-hander is only 3-10 with a 6.16 earned run average in 16 career starts against New York. He made one start versus the Mets last year and was hammered for seven runs in just 5 2/3 innings of a loss.

Penny, though, is undefeated over his last four starts this year. He won two outings in a row to close out May before posting no decisions in each of his last two starts. He last faced Toronto on Friday and didn’t factor into the decision despite allowing only one run on five hits while striking out seven over 7 2/3 innings.

The right-hander is 7-1 on the year with the NL’s second best ERA at 2.26.

Jorge Sosa will try to extend his personal three-start winning streak for the Mets tonight. Sosa is coming off his best outing of the year Friday against Detroit, as he threw eight shutout innings, scattering four hits and two walks while striking out five, to improve to 6-1 with a 2.64 ERA on the year.

Sosa has limited opponents to two runs or fewer in six of his seven starts this year. The right-hander has faced the Dodgers five times in his career, once as a starter, and has a 3.48 ERA against them without a decision.

The righty’s lone start versus the Dodgers came with the Braves in May of 2006 and he allowed three runs on seven hits over seven frames.

New York is facing the Dodgers for the first time since sweeping the best-of- five NLDS last October. The Mets also held a 4-3 edge in their season series with LA last year and won two of three at Dodger Stadium.

Final Score: San Antonio 75, Cleveland 72

Cleveland, OH - LeBron James missed a potential game-tying three-pointer in the final seconds, as the Spurs edged Cleveland, 75-72, to move to the verge of a sweep in the NBA Finals and solidifying their franchise as a dynasty.

Tony Parker had 17 points to lead the Spurs. Tim Duncan, who was held scoreless in the middle two quarters, had 14 points and nine boards for San Antonio, which is ahead 3-0 in the series, and a victory away from winning the title for a fourth time in nine years. The Spurs can complete the sweep Thursday night at Quicken Loans Arena.

No team has ever rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win a best-of-seven series.

James hit a layup with 6.3 seconds left to get the Cavaliers within 73-72, but Manu Ginobili drained two free throws with 5.5 seconds left.

On the ensuing inbounds pass, Bruce Bowen, San Antonio’s defensive stopper who had 13 points, got his hands on James, trying for the foul before a three-point try in the closing seconds. No foul was called and James’ shot caromed off the rim. Zydrunas Ilgauskas tried to keep the ball alive for the Cavs, but time ran out, and Cleveland, in its maiden voyage to the Finals, is in danger of going down in four straight.

James then complained to the officials that a foul should have been called while he was in the act of shooting, but the Spurs walked off the court a win shy of another championship.

“I’m just thrilled by Bruce Bowen,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “He’s guarding somebody that’s going to be a Hall of Fame player when it’s all said and done obviously. What a yeoman effort on his part. I just thought he was fantastic.”

Even though the Spurs had a foul to give, James called the contact incidental with Bowen after the game.

“It didn’t affect my shot. I had a good look at it, I missed it,” James said.

James had 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Drew Gooden contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out, and Sasha Pavlovic also had 13 points. Ilgauskas ended with 12 points and 18 boards.

The 147 points nearly set a record for the lowest combined score in a Finals game in NBA history. That mark is held in a 74-71 final with the Fort Wayne Pistons beating the Syracuse Nationals in 1955.

Three-point shooting was a big difference, as the Spurs made 10-of-19 from beyond the arc, while the Cavs were 3-for-19. Bowen made 4-of-5 from long distance.

Michael Finley’s three-pointer boosted the Spurs to a 67-57 lead with 6:38 left in the game, but the Cavaliers scored the next eight points, getting within two on a pair of James foul shots with 1:55 left.

Duncan came back with two free throws and Parker seemed to hit the dagger, a three from the right wing, for a 72-67 margin with a minute left. Pavlovic then banged in a three from the left corner.

Anderson Varejao blocked Parker’s shot along the left baseline with 25 seconds to go, but the Cavs didn’t call a timeout. Instead, James fed the ball in the lane to Varejao, who spun past Duncan, but missed badly on a scoop shot.

Ginobili hit a foul shot with 10.4 seconds left to set up the dramatic ending.

Ginobili had just three points, but Daniel Gibson, who had stepped up in a few playoff games for the Cavaliers, went a dismal 1-of-10 from the field for two points.

The Cavs, who hosted an NBA Finals game for the first time in their 37-year history, elected to go with Gibson as their starting point guard. Larry Hughes was inactive for the contest due to a left foot injury.

It was tight throughout the opening quarter. James’ layup moved the Cavs ahead 5-4, and the home team didn’t trail the rest of the period, holding an 18-16 edge after 12 minutes.

Parker hit a shot in the lane at the buzzer to cap a big run at the end of the second quarter, giving the Spurs a 40-38 lead at the half. Robert Horry, in a quest for his seventh championship ring, hit a three-pointer with 31.2 seconds left in the half. Then, after Gibson missed a layup, Parker drove into the lane for his shot to culminate 10 straight San Antonio points to end the half.

The star players for both teams accumulated three fouls in the first half. Duncan had eight points for the Spurs, while James tallied a team-best nine for the Cavs, but both went to the bench midway through the second after being charged a third foul.

Although the Cavs trailed by just two, compared to the 25 they were behind at the break on Sunday, Cleveland could never go back in front. They were behind 55-50 going into the fourth quarter.

Game Notes

The Spurs shot 36.7 percent from the field, while the Spurs ended at 41.2 percent…Bowen also had nine boards.

(Tuesday, June 12th)

Final Score: Detroit 4, Milwaukee 0

Detroit, MI - Justin Verlander etched his name in Tigers history, throwing the team’s first no-hitter in 23 years while striking out a career-high 12 batters in Detroit’s 4-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Verlander (7-2) walked four batters, with three of them coming to Bill Hall. The 24-year-old right-hander also got the benefit of two great fielding plays from Magglio Ordonez and Neifi Perez to toss Detroit’s first no-hitter since Jack Morris turned the trick, April 7, 1984 against the White Sox in Chicago. It was the sixth no-hitter in team annals, and this was the first for the Tigers in Detroit since Virgil Trucks shut down the Washington Senators at Briggs Stadium on May 15, 1952. Verlander, chosen as the second overall pick in the 2004 draft out of Old Dominion, pitched the second no-hitter in the majors this season. He joined Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox. Buehrle no-hit Texas on April 18 at U.S. Cellular Field. Verlander threw 73 of his 112 pitches for strikes. Brandon Inge homered and drove in two runs for the Tigers, who won for the fifth time in six games. Curtis Granderson tripled in a run and Placido Polanco had a sacrifice fly in the opener of the three-game interleague series. Jeff Suppan (7-7) was charged with seven hits and four runs over 6 1/3 innings, as the Brewers lost for the fourth time in five contests.

Final Score: Philadelphia 7, Chicago White Sox 3

Philadelphia, PA - Chase Utley hit a two-run homer and drove in four runs as the Philadelphia Phillies downed the Chicago White Sox, 7-3, in the second of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park. Utley finished 3- for-3 with two runs scored and Greg Dobbs drove in two runs while Pat Burrell also had an RBI for the Phillies, who have won three of their last four games. Cole Hamels (9-2) turned in another stellar performance as he was charged with just two runs on six hits with a walk and eight strikeouts in eight innings of work to earn his third win in his last four starts. Hamels now leads the National League in wins, one ahead of the Dodgers’ Randy Wolf. Paul Konerko, Jermaine Dye and Luis Terrero each hit solo home runs for the White Sox, who have dropped seven of their past eight contests. Jose Contreras (4-7) was saddled with the loss after he gave up seven runs — five earned — on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Final Score: Washington 7, Baltimore 4

Baltimore, MD - Ryan Zimmerman and Brian Schneider each hit two-run home runs as the Washington Nationals beat the Baltimore Orioles, 7-4, in the opener of a three-game interleague set.

Final Score: Florida 3, Cleveland 0

Miami, FL - Miguel Olivo’s three-run double in the seventh inning lifted the Florida Marlins over the Cleveland Indians, 3-0, in the opener of a three-game interleague set at Dolphin Stadium. Scott Olsen (5-5) tossed seven innings of three-hit ball and combined with Armando Benitez and Kevin Gregg on the shutout. Olsen, who also struck out six, picked up his first win in three decisions and just his second win in eight starts (2-4). Olivo ended 1-for-3 for the Marlins, who ended a two-game slide and won for the fourth time in six outings. Alfredo Amezega added a hit and made three nice running catches to help preserve the shutout, including a leaping catch at the wall in the ninth. Casey Blake extended his career-best hitting streak to a current major league-best 21 games, ending 1-for-4 for the Indians, who have dropped three straight and seven of 10. Cleveland starting pitcher Fausto Carmona (7-2) was nearly perfect until running into trouble in the seventh and eventually suffering his first setback since April 13 — a span of 11 starts. The right-hander was charged with three runs on five hits, striking out a career-high tying six in seven frames.

Final Score: Pittsburgh 7, Texas 5

Pittsburgh, PA - Jose Bautista, Xavier Nady and Adam LaRoche all homered as the Pittsburgh Pirates downed the Texas Rangers, 7-5, in the first of a three-game set at PNC Park. Zach Duke (3-6) went six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, while walking two and striking out three. Matt Capps recorded the final three outs for his third save in as many chances for the Pirates, who were swept by the Yankees over the weekend. Kevin Millwood (2-6) was tagged for six runs — five earned — on eight hits, while walking two and striking out one in just 4 1/3 frames for Texas, which has lost four of six. Sammy Sosa drove in two runs and Marlon Byrd scored twice for the Rangers.

Final Score: Boston 2, Colorado 1

Boston, MA - J.D. Drew’s eighth-inning sacrifice fly pushed across the game-winning run, as Boston edged Colorado, 2-1, in the first installment of a three-game interleague series at Fenway Park. Tim Wakefield (6-7) allowed one run and four hits over eight innings, with three strikeouts and a walk. Jonathan Papelbon hurled a scoreless inning to earn his 15th save. Kevin Youkilis had a run-scoring single for the Red Sox, winners in four of their last five games. David Ortiz picked up three hits while Julio Lugo and Alex Cora scored a run each. Aaron Cook (4-3) was the hard-luck loser for Colorado despite scattering seven hits and two runs over 7 1/3 innings, fanning four and walking two. Yorvit Torrealba collected two hits and knocked in a run for the Rockies, who were held to four hits and lost for the second time in their last six games. Brad Hawpe doubled and scored a run in defeat.

Final Score: NY Yankees 4, Arizona 1

Bronx, NY - Bobby Abreu’s hot bat belted a three-run homer and Chien-Ming Wang tossed seven stellar innings, as the streaking New York Yankees captured their seventh straight victory with a 4-1 decision over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opener of a three-game interleague series at Yankee Stadium. Wang (6-4) allowed one run on six hits with two strikeouts for the Yankees, whose season-high seventh straight win brought their record to 31-31 on the season. Abreu, who is now 19-for-41 over his last 11 games and finished 4- for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI on Sunday, raised his 2007 batting average to .273. New York sits 9 1/2 games behind Boston, which defeated Colorado earlier Tuesday, in the AL East. Chad Tracy’s solo home run accounted for the only offense for Arizona, which has dropped four of its last five games overall. Reigning NL Cy Young winner Brandon Webb (6-4) took the mound in front of the New York faithful and yielded four runs — three earned — on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Final Score: Tampa Bay 11, San Diego 4

St. Petersburg, FL - Carlos Pena hit a grand slam and finished with five RBI as Tampa Bay rallied late to crush San Diego, 11-4, in the opener of a three-game interleague set.

Final Score: Cincinnati 5, LA Angels of Anaheim 3

Cincinnati, OH - Ken Griffey Jr. knocked in the go-ahead run as the Cincinnati Reds beat the LA Angels of Anaheim, 5-3, in the opener of a three-game interleague set at Great American Ballpark. Josh Hamilton went 2- for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Reds, who have won four of their last five games following a four-game slide. Jon Coutlangus (3-1) pitched a perfect inning in relief of Bronson Arroyo, who allowed three runs on nine hits, walked three and struck out five in the six innings of work. David Weathers got the last four outs for his 13th save in 15 chances. Casey Kotchman and Gary Matthews Jr. hit solo homers for the Angels, who lost for just the third time in their last ten games and wasted a dominant performance by Kelvim Escobar. Escobar struck out a career-high 14 over six innings. He allowed three runs on five hits, walked one and departed after his pitch count reached 116. Dustin Moseley (4-1) allowed a run on two hits while recording just one out for the loss.

Final Score: Minnesota 7, Atlanta 3

Minneapolis, MN - Luis Castillo went 3-for-5 with two RBI as Minnesota rocked Atlanta, 7-3, in the opener of a three-game interleague set at the Metrodome. Kevin Slowey (2-0) allowed seven hits and three runs — two earned — over six full innings to remain perfect on the season. Kyle Davies (3-5) gave up six hits and five runs in 3 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking a pair. Oscar Villarreal and Blaine Boyer also yielded runs in relief. Jeff Francoeur finished 2-for-4 with a home run for the Braves, whose modest two- game win streak was halted. Scott Thorman also homered and Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove in a run, while Willie Harris had three hits in a losing cause.

Final Score: Kansas City 8, St. Louis 1

Kansas City, MO - Brian Bannister pitched seven scoreless innings and Esteban German drove in three runs, as the Kansas City Royals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-1, in the opener of a three-game intra- state interleague series at Kauffman Stadium. Bannister (3-3) allowed seven hits and struck out six batters for the Royals, who have won three of their last four games. Mark Teahen and Jason LaRue both added two RBI in the win. Ryan Ludwick hit a pinch-hit home run for St. Louis, which has lost four of its last five games and fell to 1-6 in interleague play this season. Brad Thompson (4-2) suffered the loss after he allowed eight runs on 10 hits over 4 1/3 innings. Thompson did not record a strikeout and issued four walks.

Final Score: Seattle 5, Chicago Cubs 3 (13 innings)

Chicago, IL - Willie Bloomquist drove in the go-ahead run in the 13th inning and the Seattle Mariners went on to defeat the Chicago Cubs, 5-3, in the opener of a three-game set at Wrigley Field. Jose Guillen homered and Kenji Johjima went 3-for-6, extending his hit streak to 10 games, and scored two runs for the Mariners, who have won five straight and nine of 10. Derrek Lee had two hits and an RBI and Mark DeRosa had three hits for Chicago, which has dropped three of four. Michael Barrett drove in the tying run in the eighth inning, but his drop of a throw at the plate in the last inning proved to be costly for the Cubs, who couldn’t rally to give manager Lou Piniella a win against one of his former teams. J.J. Putz worked the bottom of the frame for his 19th consecutive save this season.

Final Score: San Francisco 3, Toronto 2

San Francisco, CA - Ryan Klesko drove in two runs and Randy Winn made a great catch to save a potential game-tying home run in the ninth inning, as the San Francisco Giants edged the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-2, in the middle contest of a three-game interleague series. Dave Roberts posted two hits and scored twice for the Giants, who have won two straight on the heels of a three-game sweep at the hands of cross-town rival Oakland over the weekend. Ray Durham notched an RBI in the win.

Final Score: Houston 5, Oakland 4 (11 innings)

Houston, TX - Brad Ausmus singled in Adam Everett in the 11th inning as the Houston Astros edged the Oakland Athletics, 5-4, in the opener of a three-game series at Minute Maid Park. Everett doubled with one out in the 11th before Ausmus singled off Ron Flores (0-1). Jason Kendall’s throw to the plate was off line and Everett scored easily. Ausmus went 3- for-5 with a homer and four RBI, and Craig Biggio also finished 3-for-5 and scored a run for the Astros, who won for just the third time in seven games. Roy Oswalt went six innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out a season-high 10 in the start. Dave Borkowski (1-0) allowed one hit and fanned four over the final two innings to pick up the win. Joe Kennedy surrendered four runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out two for the A’s, who lost for only the second time in their last 10. Mark Kotsay went 4-for-5 with an RBI and run scored.

Final Score: Los Angeles 4, New York 1

Los Angeles, CA - Wilson Betemit, Matt Kemp, and Hong-Chih Kuo homered on three consecutive pitches in the second inning, as the Los Angeles Dodgers topped the New York Mets, 4-1, in the second game of a three-game series at Dodger Stadium. Kuo (1-1), who allowed a run on five hits over seven innings, continued his mastery of the Mets. His four career outings (two starts) versus New York have spanned 16 innings, and he has given up just one run while scattering nine hits and striking out 16 over that span. Kemp finished 2-for-3 with two RBI a run scored for the Dodgers, who have won two straight. John Maine (6-4) allowed seven hits, four runs, walked two and fanned two in 5 1/3 innings for New York, which has dropped four straight games and eight of its last nine. Their lead in the NL East has slimmed to just two games over second-place Atlanta, and three over third- place Philadelphia. Carlos Delgado knocked in the lone run for the Mets, who managed just five hits in the contest. David Wright also went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
