Milwaukee (29-24) had a 2-1 lead over Atlanta in the seventh before four relievers combined to give up eight runs in the last two innings of a 9-3 loss on Wednesday.

The NL Central-leading Brewers lost two of three to the Braves and have dropped 14 of 19 overall after a 24-10 start. They have lost six straight series after winning 10 of their first 11.

Claudio Vargas (3-1, 4.01 ERA), who will start for the Brewers tonight, is 2-2 with a 6.35 ERA in four starts against the Marlins.

Vargas, though, was solid in a start against Florida on April 10, yielding two runs in six innings while striking out nine before Milwaukee won 3-2 in 13 innings. The right-hander, though, is 0-1 with a 7.04 ERA in his last three starts after being reached for four runs and a season-high 10 hits in 5 1-3 innings of a 6-3 defeat to San Diego on Saturday night.

Florida’s Wes Obermueller (1-3, 5.28 ERA) will be making his first start against the Brewers, with whom he played from 2003-05.

Obermueller was terrible in his last outing, giving up seven runs and eight hits in four innings as Florida lost 7-2 to the New York Mets on Saturday night, raising his ERA more than one-and-a-half runs.

On paper no question the Brewers send the better pitcher to the mound tonight with Vargas coming in with a projected era in this contest at 5.99 and a current era of 3.61, but what about the psyche of this team? Now, even the Milwaukee Brewers’ bullpen is cracking up.

Obermueller got rocked his last time out and comes in with a projected era for this one at 9.69 and a current era of 5.61. But he knows he has the better sticks on his side, even though the fish are prone to errors especially at third base. I think the Brewers are way over priced here.

Philadelphia (26-24) leads the NL in runs scored and its .267 batting average ranks third in the league. The Phillies outscored the Atlanta Braves 27-13 and hit .310 during a three-game sweep over the weekend, scoring a season high in runs in Sunday’s 13-6 victory.

The Diamondbacks (29-23) rank only 12th in the NL with a .254 batting average, but their offense is also showing signs of coming around. Arizona outscored the Houston Astros 35-12 and hit .368 during a four-game sweep, culminating with an 8-4 win in Sunday’s finale.

Doug Davis (2-6, 3.57 ERA) went seven innings in his last start on Wednesday, holding Colorado to two runs and six hits, but lost 2-0. The left-hander has gotten just three total runs of support in his last five starts, going 0-4 with a 4.34 ERA during that stretch.

Freddy Garcia (1-3, 4.81) opposed Davis three weeks ago, and will do so again Monday. Garcia also gave up two runs over six innings in that meeting - one of only three quality starts in his eight outings this season.

He allowed three runs over six innings in Wednesday’s 8-7, 10-inning victory over Florida.

The right-hander, who hasn’t recorded a victory in more than a month, has a 2.08 ERA in two career starts versus the Diamondbacks, but has yet to earn a decision against them.

Arizona took two of three games between these teams May 7-9, but the Phillies have won six of the last eight meetings at Citizens Bank Park.

Philadelphia, which is opening a seven-game homestand, is trying to win its sixth consecutive home series.

Neither side has great value in this one both coming off sweeps, even though I give the edge in talent here to the Dbacks who from top to bottom are the more solid team, especailly with the young talent coming up.

The value in this one is on the total. Doug Davis coming in with a projected era of 6.56 and former M’s pitcher Freddy Garcia 4.13

Peavy (6-1, 1.63 ERA) is 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA in his last four starts. He allowed one run and four hits over six innings in a 5-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.

After recording 46 strikeouts over four starts from April 25-May 11, Peavy has struck out only 11 over his last two outings for San Diego (28-21). The right-hander still has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 4.05, second in the NL to teammate Greg Maddux.

Peavy is 1-2 with a 3.51 ERA in six career starts against the Brewers.

Milwaukee (28-21) has hit 65 home runs to tie Cincinnati for the NL lead, but the Brewers head into Sunday’s finale of a six-game road trip trying to avoid a season-high fifth straight loss. They fell for the 11th time in 15 games with a 6-3 loss on Saturday.

With the win, San Diego moved into a tie for first place in the NL West with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres are seeking their first three-game sweep of the Brewers since July 20-22, 2001.

The Brewers’ Jeff Suppan (6-4, 3.49) will face the Padres for the first time since last year’s NL Division Series while with St. Louis. Suppan allowed three runs over 4 1-3 innings in a 3-1 loss in Game 3, but the Cardinals won the next game to capture the series.

The veteran right-hander is 3-2 with a 6.56 ERA in seven regular-season starts against the Padres. He’s 1-1 with a 7.36 ERA while surrendering four homers over 11 innings in two outings at Petco Park.

Suppan avoided a third straight loss by allowing four runs in six-plus innings in a 9-5 victory at the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday.

Jake Peavy comes into this contest with a projected era of 1.41 and Suppan at 5.04
