Knowing When To Pass – by Professional Handicapper: Tommy Mac

When I pass, I release the probability of losing and increase the expectation and certainty of winning! Quote: Tommy Mac

Knowing WHEN to pass is as important as knowing when to PLAY! Ever feel the need to play a game or a set of games you know little or nothing about, yet you play them anyway, only to find out that your bookie just beat you on every game?

That’s because you still haven’t learned the lesson of what I simply call for gaming and wagering purposes, tension and release.

Every time you win, you are adding tension against your bookie, especially with more prolonged winning streaks. That leads to what I call “tension against your bookie”, or another phrase I like using is, ” up against the number. ”

You can only win so many games and days in a row on the plus side to where the odds increase exponentially against you to lose, so much so, that it wouldn’t matter what you picked you are still going to lose. No matter how many times you roll it around in your cranium, you are still going to gravitate to the loser. Ever wonder why?

Like that one special huge winning streak you may have had, remember? That was when your bookie kept calling you and followed you around like a lost puppy dog begging for a bone for more action. Do you think that’s because he wanted to keep taking the worst of it? No it’s because he knew if you kept playing at the rate you were playing, the games will start falling back into his favor, not yours. And they did, didn’t they. Ouch!

Those were the days, or a certain set of games when instinctively you should have known to pass. That would have released the tension, and allowed those losing set of numbers or set of games against you to pass you by like a bull under a matador’s cape. “Olea!”

Then, after you had released that tension, you should have drawn your sword back out and driven it right between your bookies ears. Great feeling isn’t it!

Or, as I like to say, “ If he wants to stick his chin out there, lets’ knock it off! “

Each day you have to start all over again, with a whole new mindset.

Dwelling on your winning streaks, (admiring your work) can be as fatal as dwelling on a losing one. You have to put both of them behind you and start with a new mindset every day. It is only the card in front of you for this set of games today or tonight that matters.

I always like to put things in a musical context and perspective.

The notes you don’t play are as important if not more so, than the notes you play. Miles Davis was always my greatest inspiration from that standpoint. For the untrained ear, I promise you, if you listen closely to any Miles solo, you will hear that the space he put in between each note became the whole of his solo. No one did it as adeptly as Miles.

A young jazz musician wants to play everything he knows. He hasn’t reached the level yet where he can solo, and at the same time know everything that the rhythm section is playing behind him. There simply is too much going on for him, all at the same time.

He hasn’t learned the art of tension and release yet. So when he rips off a great run, and inspires the rhythm section behind him creating more energy, he finally learns that this is the time to stop playing, and let his rhythm section take him to the next level of energy. In fact, it could be as simple as what the drummer is playing just off his kick drum.

As we enter into the “Big Dance” with so many games, and so many things happening at a very fast pace, keep this one phrase in mind “Know When To Pass.” It will serve you well.
